While I was under the car changing the thermostat, I notice this whole by the transmission area. Is this normal?

It is just your normal access opening. Get the rubber plug from Max @Five Star so you don't keep pumpuing dust and grit up there and eroding a seal.

I think he is referring to the trans fluid leak that appears evident in the photos. It's the front pump seal leaking in the trans, fixed many. You have to drop the trans so you might as well do a stall converter too.

Don't all of the mark VIII trannys leak there just a bit? All of the ones that I have seen are wet there.

Yes I too see it alot and it's 9 times out of 10 the front pump seal.
All I know is when I replace the front pump seal with a leak like the one pictured it goes away.

well not all of them do... mine doesnt...and i cant say yet cuz im about to pull it yet again...but im putting in a different one so its okay. then i get to start rebuilding the original. but yeah definitely get that leak fixed or else you are going to start ruining your internals, especially on cold starts (you know how often that happens here though, right? haha) but yeah, keep an eye on your fluid level till you get it done as well. on my suburban the whole cover between the bellhousing and the tranny and engine is missing...someone did work on it and bent it and i have yet to get another one.
