SO i bought a 1994 Mark VIII recently drive for a while and notice that sometimes it will rev up randomly around 40 or 50 mph and like its going to downshift but it wont go in to gear and eventually it goes back to the gear it came from...
Its been doing it a little more often lately and im starting to get worried. It will do it at anywhere from 20 mph to 50. It seems to do it a lot more when there is less weight in the car also, like when the gas tank is low and its just me in the car. I checked the transmission fluid and there seems to be too much in there. The transmission is not leaking andy fluid and the fluid seems alright. Could this just be too much fluid causing this? My dad doesnt think that explains it all. ANY idea's or suggestions? Do i have to start looking for a new transmission?

Does it feel like the torque converter is unlocking/locking?

When you're driving at 45 mph and just touch the brake, the torque converter should unlock. Does it feel something like that?

I think it is but when braking down from 45 or so once it gets a little under 30 it feels like it start slowing down a little harder like something engages

i dont know if thats related but...

How many miles on trans? Could be the MLP Sensor/neutral safety switch. Is it like the trans shifts to neutral, then "slips" back into gear? NAPA has them for like $30, and they call it Neutral Safety Switch.

The manual lever position (MLP) sensor sends a signal to the PCM assembly, to indicate position of the shift lever (P,R,N,(D),2,1). The MLP sensor is located on the outside of the transmission on the manual lever shaft.

NOTE:
The sensor also contains the PARK/NEUTRAL position and backup lamp circuits.

Transmission Function:

Determines desired gear and EPC pressure.

Symptoms:

Engagement concerns, wrong gear, no shifts.

DTC's: 634 and 522

That sounds almost exactly like whats going on. I'll have to check that out thanks! As far as i know there are only 90000 miles on the transmission though.

Hope that fix's your problem. Something else you may consider is an aftermarket trans cooler. Get one rated for 24,000 GVW and bypass the factory cooler in the radiator.

Good luck.

When it revs up like i said, it still seems that i can get some forward momentum like maybe its going between neutral and the last gear.. does that make sense or go along with the NSS being broken?
