Is it fuel pump replacement time? 146,000 miles

So I have been thinking about replacing my fuel pump. The car is a 1995, has over over 146,000 miles, and the engine hesitates or cuts in and out in the higher rpm's until warmed up. It's acted this way since I got the car and isn't a big deal, but Im afraid of frying a piston because of the lack of fuel.

Any suggestions welcome.
 
it only cuts out when the engine is cold?
and goes away when it warms up?

new o2s fixed that on mine. a pump didn't make any difference.
your mileage may vary.

Yes it only happens on a cold engine. Once It's warm, it doesn't happen.
 
I will tell you this. A new fuel pump made my 98 alot faster. It had 125,xxx. It's alot easier to do it when the tanks is empty. 100,000 seems average, but some last a lot longer.
 
Do a pressure check on the fuel pump.

30 psi with FPR's plugged up and 39.5psi when they are unhooked. It's the definitive answer to your question.

I had 25psi and had flat spot's in torque at high rpm. New fuel pump fixed the problem and gave me 4mpg. Go figure.

Wow thats an awesome fuel milage increase.
I might have to see if I can barrow one of those gauges from my local auto parts store.
I would rather not replace the pump if i don't have to.
 
I believe a weak pump is what caused my popped head gasket. I don't have a pressure gauge but the car def perked up a little when I changed the pump and that's with only 85K. With 146K I would be changing the pump soon.
 
When was the last time the fuel pump filter in your car was replaced? If unknown, replace it, it is easy to do. I have the exact dimensions on a hole to cut under the back seat, if you don't want to drop the tank to get to the pump.

It would take longer to mark and cut the whole than it would to drop an empty tank. I've done 2 and it took less than 20 min to have the tank out and on the ground. Of corse that's on rust free cars.
 
I have a north east car and it wasn't a problem dropping the tank. Broke one stub on the exhaust but that's an easy fix.

I don't think it has ever been replaced. The spark plugs were original when i changed them, so i don't the fuel pump would have been replaced. I was thinking about cutting the hole but I'm afraid of all the sparks it would make above the pump.

My car is rusty. The quarter panels were both rotted off and there is some rust underneath it. It's going to be a pain to drop the tank.

Is that generic fuel pump I linked above any good?

What he said......Don't just assume it bad.
Check it.
 
I finally have gotten around to checking the fuel pressure, here is my findings:
Engine running at idle 31psi
Engine off turning key to on position, pressure would peak at 40psi then slowly drop down to 15. I think it would have kept dropping but it was going very slowly and I was cold Hah.

that's correct.
although either the pump or the FPR is bleeding off pressure a little quick.

So you think the o2 sensors may be causing my issue. I burn e85 in the summer, does that kill the o2's?
 
if you have 146k miles and don't think the O2s have ever been replaced, they are overdue anyway.
