Having an extra IAC that did not work correctly, I decided to cut it open with my dremel tool to see what is inside. Found it was just another piston solenoid, spring loaded. You cannot repair the unit, it is factory press covered. Looks very similar to the DCCV valve solenoid. Same problem with this one as the DCCV, gunk getting into the piston area. Carbon from the intake found its way up the main shaft into the piston area. Piston was scratched and coated with black carbon. I guess when the shaft seals gap from age the carbon has a way to enter the piston chamber and bugger the thing up. The price has been coming down to less than $30 for these things, so just toss the old one.

Count your blessings. Every car I've ever had used an IAC that cost maybe $100 at the most. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that one for my 20 year old Lexus v8 costs $700 -- and that's an aftermarket part from AutoZone! OEM goes for $900 and up.

You can buy a whole running engine for $500ish. I didn't pay $900 for the entire car! (rebuild project)
