I am picking up an HVLP system this weekend for another project. I would love to get a new shell (Gen II) and swap in my drive train, but lets face it - thats a lot of work.

So I think I am going to paint the Mark. I would love a Mercedes Silver but since this will be my first paint job I dont want to set the standard too high.

I think I will go with Black. I plan to remove as much from the car as I can and paint each part separately then reassemble and put a final coat on. Remember, I am going from white so I need to take a lot off to get behind everything. I do need to pick up a driver's side door and fender though so I am on the hunt for a local wrecked Mark which are NOT easy to come by.

If I am lucky I will have it done before July so I can make it to the meet. Maybe the new paint job will get me to start and finish some other lighting mods and projects for the Mark.

Good switch from Silver to Black! Not only in color choice, but being a first time painter.. Silver metallic will not be fun. Not only will the paint cost more, but you will run into dilemmas. It takes a few tries to get metallics to lay right, especially silver which is my worst enemy.

Ya, thats why I went away from a silver or paint with an additive. Black can be had cheap and pretty easy to fix a mistake. Although ANYTHING I do will look better than it does now.

The jambs will be a pain. I may just remove the doors completely. The passenger side need major rust work anyway and the drivers side should get replaced, it does not align right at all. Before I got the car someone tried to brake into it by prying on the upper part of the door so it was bent out.
 
black is a tough color, but will show you how well you did or did not perform the prep work.

every little ding and depression will be lit up like NEON compared to a white car.

you'd better do good prep work, then go back and do it again.
on the third time of blocking,filling and sanding, you MIGHT have it smooth enough to look good in black.

If I were you, I'd go with your original pick...silver.
I dont know how "mercedes silver" compares to Lincolns Silver Frost..but my car has ALOT of dings dents and BS that hide pretty well on silver.

I'd say, try painting the hood Silver first...then if you dont like it, sand it and paint it black
 
Really? I thought black was more forgiving, but I can see what you are saying.

I know prep is the most important part. I have a friend that has done may restorations that will help a little. He is the one borrowing me the HVLP system.
 
I agree with Black showing bad bodywork, but it's easy to paint and like Unity said.. easy to fix and blend off the car.

Silver Metallics or all metallics for that matter.. will show bad gun settings, spray patterns, gun control position. Basically, it will not be had the first time around. And being a first timer, forget about blending mishaps.. Metallic falloffs will show once the sun hits revealing a funked paint job.

My first ever Silver Metallic paint job = panel overlays and Tiger stripes!!!!! fugly.
 
Black is hard....shows everything.

I love Black and it can be done, its just more work.

Yea.. the wife's Oldest sister lives near there.. i forget the town. she wanted to move but.. i opted for the- live and die in Norcal. ya never know tho!

well, to get back on topic I guess Tommy's right about painting the hood silver first...that'll give a little practice and also to see how well it'll look on the Mark, Which I believe would be Sick because the Mercedes' Silver is the Best Factory looking Silver I've seen
 
Ya. There is something about the Mercedes Silver that I like more than any other silver.

I am going to talk to my painter guy and see what he says. Maybe I can get him to at least to the prep work.

+1 MB silver is the nicest in my book.

Since youll have someone with experience there to help ya, you can't go wrong..

heck.. have him paint the whole dam thing! :) or diy and go black.. , you can paint blindfolded for all i know.

Well there is a guy who I wanted to do all this in the first place, but he never has time. I figure if I can prep and he can paint, or the other way around, I can maybe end up with something better if I did it myself.

I have a friend who also does restoration. He can help with pointers but has too much going on to do anything else for sure.

I guess either way I will have help which is great.

Make sure that bitch is clean!!!! Masking will be fun... Don't forget it's not only the Jambs you're going to paint, but the inside door skin as well!
