I have a 2001 LS and there is a humming noise at 50MPH+. It gets louder and faster as I go faster. I know a few people had this problem. Rear differential? This ype of thing covered under the extended warranty?
The tires, balancing and alignment are good. The tires are not cupping

You can try "swerving" the car from side to side when it happens and see if that makes a difference. If it does, it is more than likely a hub bearing. If you swerve left and the noise goes away, it's the left hub bearing that's making the noise. And of course, if you swerve right and the noise goes away, it's the right bearing. What you are doing is unloading the bearing on the side you swerve to which will make the noise go away...or drastically reduced.

It didnt seem to make much difference.. A mechanic said something about the rear differential

If that's the case, it could be diff bearings or ring and pinion. I have seen a complete IRS for sale on eBay for $200!!! It may be worth looking into.
