Yeah, it works. The first time I saw it was in a program on Discovery or PBS about some 4x4s that were prepared for an Antarctic mission. They ran really low pressure in their really big tires (under 10psi, IIRC), and they used ether and flame to re-seat the bead if it came loose.
And those a wussy yankee rednecks. Real rednecks would have gotten it right the first time.
