i found some guys on a mustang forum.. theyve got some xcals for sale...... is this a bad idea? i know they will work on any 96+ ford product.. will i be able to delete their cars info and load mine? can it contain any virii? will it still be warrantied? what are some other questions i should ask about this>?

I think the only thing is to make sure the unit is unlocked, that is the car it was last used on was returned to the stock setting. Then you need to get custom tunes for your car from some sct tuner.
Also find out how many cars it has been used on because I think there is a limit like after 5 you can't switch to anymore cars.

If it is vin-locked, you will need to pay the tuner a fee to unlock it. Most sold on eBay are locked.

You will need to order a custom tune for your vehicle/catchcode from your preferred SCT dealer to use it.

Honestly unless you really know exactly what you are doing then I suggest buying new. You will save probably $20-$50 in total after getting a used Xcal and getting your tunes for it. Even after that you still don't have any real dealer support after that for the device which is what really counts for allot. If it decides to mess up then you would be SOL. In some cases I have seen people trying to save a quick buck on forums and Ebay actually pay more for the used Xcal and tuning once they realized a few hidden costs that they were not aware of.

Best of luck with whatever decision you make.

heres his quote..

"I used this on my 01 mustang. It will work on ANY 96+ ford car/truck. I returned my mustang back to stock before I sold it, so this unit is unlocked. The xcal2 is in great shape no cracks, scratches etc, the screen is also in like new condition."

and another.. ebay.

"I bought this over a year ago for $500. It has the capability for 3 tunes plus a setting for stock. You can download the program for SCTs website to get the program to tune your vehical and adjust your programs. This does come with 2 tunes loaded on it but it was for my old car a 2000 Crown Vic. I no longer have it so I have no use for this tuner anymore. These can be easily be deleted and you can tune your vehical yourself or have someone set it up for you.

The Tuner is in Great condition, doesn't even look used. It is in its original box and also comes with a USB cable to connect the tuner to your computer."

Listen to ILLS, he is a tuner.

New SCT XCAL2 runs about $400 plus shipping includes 3 tunes and after the sale customer service, very important to dial in your custom tunes.

My personal experience is with torrie@fastpartsnetwork.com.

Both Torrie and ILLS are experienced with Lincoln LS.

ya man, do what ILLS says...

Im going through the process of getting one through him right now... so far so good. :)

If I had to pick I would say that the first ad from the guy with the 01 Mustang you posted gives a little more warm and fuzzy. It is all a crapshoot and you still do not get the same level of support compared to if you bought new. Unless you get a REALLY killer deal on a used Xcal it is usually not worth it for most people. In the end the choice is yours bud. Purchase from whomever you feel the most comfortable with.

killer deal= 100$? i think thats about as killer as it would get.. im weary still due to the fact that computers area computers.. and my car is my car.... being its not new and its been sitting inside some random persons house for however long....i dont load just any software onto my pc.. and as for my car.... you get the pic.

ok... so buy one from ILLS and you wont have to worry at all, and you will be supporting a forum member, and your car wont explode.

I don't get it. Your asking is it a good idea or if it's safe. Then you answer your own question pretty much saying your weary loading something into your cars computer not knowing the previous owner or where it came from just to save a quick buck.

So then here's your solution....listen to ILLS.
