So over the last few months ive been working on bringing my car back to life and or giving it a little pep. Some of the things ive managed to pick up is a 1 piece shaft. a freshly rebuild posi and a brand new set of ford 4.10 gears. And with some good luck I will be getting those installed later today or tomorrow. i hope. oh yes do i hope.

Im very excited I can not wait to get these suckers installed. I dont have the tools or knowledge to install that stuff myself. so this is one of those it goes to a shop deals. I really hate letting shops work on my rides. hopefully all goes well.

from my understanding the rear end is gonna be rebuilt pretty much 100 percent all new carrier bearings bushings and what ever else is in those damn things. I know i cant wait to press the pedal. i know there is some break in with gears so thats gonna be hard for me to not wanna do. Also i dont have a speed cal or a speed-o gear either. so should be interesting :)

I guess that brings me to a question. Can i fix the speedometer with a tune or do i still need a speed-o gear or a speedcal installed? I would much rather take the 100 bucks it would cast for a speedcal and invest it into a blue ovals tune that corrects for the gear size.

Thanks for any advice input and what not.
 
4.10s? speedo gear will work. the black one. mustangs unlimited has a nice piece. some people say they wear out quickly. but mine has lasted and is still going good.

well the mustang unlimited site is down. i'll check back for a part number later.
 
I want to avoid the speed-0 gear. heard to many bad things about using those. if anything id use the speedcal. I was just curious if i needed both a tune and the speed cal or if it was one or the other to fix the issue. know what i mean.
 
What's wrong with using a speedometer gear, all it is is changing the stock plastic gear with a different sized gear with less teeth to correct the speedometer..I know some cars have this gear in the trans, not sure about the Mark but I would assume its the same.
 
won't a tune be needed anyways to adjust shift points?
-fwiw, I'm on the cusp of having the same mod done (3.73? 4.10? tbd!)
- one very well-established repair shop here said they did rear ends, then when I told it was for my Mark VIII they said 'no thanks'....they didn't want to mess with the IRS, felt like they'd never get it done without making noise
 
im getting a tune very soon as well. as for the speed gear it breaks up and gets into the transmission and causes problems after a while. theres mixed emoitions on this. the popular vote is to use a speed cal to do it correctly.

I just dropped the car at the shop. i think they are gonna put in a 3.73 speed or gear or something. not to sure. i may just order the black heavy duty one to hold me over till i get my dallas speed cal. either wait i still cant wait to drive the car with the new set up.
 
Just get the gear and be done. Its cheap and gets you close fast. For 15 dollars whats the big deal. If and when you get tune or speed cal just put your stock gear back in. I have been running the gear for awhile now. It finally started to pull some teeth off.

yea thats the route i was thinking actually
 
well the speedcal is pricey. but it is a nice piece. you'll want a tune either way, your shift points will be wrong. too early. my car would be in OD by 30 mph.
 
when did the speedo go from geared to electronic? '94? '95? like myself you have a '96, right TO?
 
yea i found them for 100 on ebay. i got the gears in today and there is zero whine which is good. they didnt have any speedo gears so they left the stock one im still trying to find out if i need both or if i need just a tune. if its just a tune im orderimng that sucker tonight.

kinda neat how off the speed is.
 
after i drove it home and no i didnt beat on it either. i could smell something cooking. im hoping thats normal after a new R&R. the second time i drove it there was no cook smell. I seriously can not wait to get the speedometer fixed. and a tune put on this thing. I so want to just stomp the pedal and go :)
 
FWIW, if your gears were set up right, a break-in period is not needed. Pure myth. Guy I know has a 9 second Duster. He did a gear swap and popped wheelies at the track the next day. You can chose to use a SpeedCal with the speedo gear, or eliminate the SpeedCal altogether and have those parameters adjusted in the tuning.
 
LMK what the tach reads when you're cruising a stable 70 mph...I'm still up in the air 3.73 or 4.10
 
someone at Mustangs Unlimited told me yesterday that for my 96, the speedo is electronic, and a mechanical gear change was not an option....?:confused:

Incorrect, all Mark VIII's have replaceable VSS gears, it's just not the best way to handle a gear change on a Gen 2.

You need both as your car is a 96, and speedometer is set up just like in any 93-96 Mark VIII.

No, seeing as the car in question is a 93-96, OP needs both the speedometer gear or Speedcal/SpeedDial to correct the speedo readings, and a trans shift schedule modified to correct the shift points.

They are as confused as this whole thread lol.
The speedo is electronic in your car, but it uses a gear driven sensor. To correct it, you have to either replace the speedo gear, or use a multiplier such as SpeedCal or FRPP Speed Dial (best choice). You cannot adjust anything in the ECU to correct the speedo readings.

...or Gen 1 for that matter :D The teeth on those speedo gears are just too thin for comfort IMO.

Look into a new unit available directly from FRPP called Speed Dial M-4209ADPT-A

or just speed around until a cop chases you, note what your speedo reads, then ask the cop what he picked up
