i had a fairly new alt. that i put in the car. everything was fine. i started cleaning the car and used the trick to clean up the engine bay. the one with the windex water and armoral. so things were good. then next day i started to hear this super loud whine at firt i thought it was a vaccume leak then upon closer inspection it turned out it was the alt. it was so loud it almost hurt to get close to it and listen to it. so i figured screw took it back replaced it. it was still under warrenty. swapped it out. and i was good for a day. then the sound just came back. so im lost. what would cause an alt to while like hell. let alone 2 of em do the same thing ?

Are you sure it's not your tension pulley? One way to find out is to spray WD-40 behind the pulley while it's running but not when the cooling fan is on. See if the noise stops.

its a brand new gator back belt. the sound is coming directly from the alt. it only does it for like a minute or two. when i start to drive or if i rev the crap out of the motor it goes away. and it only seams to do it when the car is cool when it warms up its gone.

i remember my water pump goin on me made an insanely loud and temperamental noise... and idler... and alt... 2wice

had something similar, i took the belt off, got some electrical contact cleaner and cleaned off all the gunk from the pulleys

im down to try anything. i just find it odd that it would make 2 new alts scream. im wondering if maybe its just not mounted tight enough. or something. its certainly coming from inside the alt.

Now that I think about it after seeing what slick said, my water pump done the same thing and I thought it was the alt too. Changed the pump and it was all quiet again. The next time, it was the idler pulley making noise but you could really hear it coming from the left. The fins inside your pump might be rubbing the inner walls of the water pump. Take the belt off (or loosen) and see if you have any play at all with the pulley on the water pump. It should not shake at all.

It's not a fomoco alt thats why. I went through 3 whiners from Napa on my mothers before getting the fomoco one. My personal Mark has a napa alt that whines from time to time when it's cold. It almost sounds like a whiny geardrive. And yes it is my alternator whining. Get a fomoco or deal with the noise. If they cry about all we can do is warranty it. Tell them you want youre money back because they sell inferior parts for the mark 8 and you are going to buy one from ford. Unless they want to start paying the install Labor. Alts shouldnt whine. I had to throw a fit to get my money from Napa, but I also buy alot of stuff for the shop also. They may not be as kind to you.

my green 94 whines sometimes too......when its sitting for a while and the batt is low......get it running and its good to go again!!

Trippen is describing something that is very loud, not just the simple known alternator whine. I also have a slight alternator whine but it's not loud and doesn't bother me. I really think there is another issue going on with his and I don't believe it's the alternator doing it. I'm leaning towards the water pump is going out and if so, it won't be long before the sound gets even louder or different noises start and become constant.

Hey trippin take the belt off and spin each pulley individually. If all the other stuff feels good then go for the ford alt.

after closer inspection today i am starting to think those that suggested the water pump may be correct. i just hope it will hold out for another couple of weeks.

Trippen, I can send you one and have it there in 2 days. It is used but it's also a good one. Nothing wrong with it. You payPal me $10 and it's yours. Up to you if you want it. PM me if interested.
