Holiday Travel Transmission Troubles

I recently had the same issue and the error code of "too lean". The COPs were the issue. The oxygen sensors on the cat are throwing the error code because there is unburnt fuel going into the cat. If you let it go on misfiring you will plug up the catalytic converter and have to replace that also.

Good info, I got plugs, coils, and vcgs (just in case) on the way. Hoping to get to it this weekend if they arrive in time. Per the helpful advice of those here not wasting too much time trying to chase other issues down until I get those swapped out. Although I may go and get a can of MAF cleaner. Not expecting it to fix the problem but figure might be good maintenance to do anyways.

Replaced the coils and plugs yesterday. There was no oil in the wells thankfully! The problem persists though. When I'm going 50mph or faster it runs smooth. But when I go slower or am slowing down the car stutters.

Fuel line issue? Fuel filter?

Oh and my check engine light went off the night before I replaced the coils and plugs ( I had system too lean codes).

Is the transmission problem fixed? I forgot to mention that the torque converter indeed can cause problems you described. It was part of the rebuild for my transmission. Since I had no clue what was happening, I kept revving the engine on the blown tranny to pick up speed. Turned out it wasn't my best idea and my torque converter turned into a glazed brownish/brozeish/bluish color. Similar to what you'd see when you heat a piece of sheet metal red hot and let it cool down. They rebuilt it for $295.

I think that is what is going on. From ehow:

It generally occurs at part throttle and light acceleration, between 15 and 50 miles per hour, just before the shift to one of the top gears where the converter reaches "lock-up."

Does this method from ehow seem like a good way to test it?

Transmissions can shudder in a very similar manner to torque converters. To determine whether the shudder is tranny or TC related, run your vehicle for a little while till it begin to shudder and immediately park it. With your foot on the brake, put the transmission in Drive, and apply light throttle. If you feel shuddering, then it's the Torque converter; if not, then the problem is within the transmission.

Well did the above test for torque shutter and it didn't shudder
when revving the engine up to two thousand rpm while in drive and foot on the brakes.

Updates

This weekend I finally got around to changing my fuel filter and a broken sway bar link.

Unfortunately, the fuel filter didn't resolve the issue of the car stuttering between 40-50Mph, more noticable when decelerating. I won't know for a couple of days yet, but I imagine my check engine light will come on again for system too lean, although the light did go back off on Friday (I did the work on Saturday).

What do I need to check next? Thanks.

More info

Additional note, when my car is slowing down from 40 to a rolling stop, my RPMs are moving all round. It'll go from 1500 RPM to 500 RPM and everywhere in between in seemingly random fashion.

I'll try to get a video of it and post it.
