I did a search but came up with nothing pertaining to my problem?

When I hit my brakes sometimes it throws a problem with check lights on the center trouble display? It is daytime so the lights aren't on and when it throws this code I have had people stand behind the car and all the brake lights work except for one of the third brake lights. I do not believe they are monitored and it does not always throw that code either and that light is burned out so?

Anybody have a problem like this or no a fix for it

I will as it is something that I must do but it does not always throw a check lights problem is the thing that get me?

I dunno. Mine was the same way. I took out a brake light assembly and forgot to hook it back up. Did not get the warning until I hot the brakes a few times driving. I think it reads the draw of the circuit, like the headlights do. It does not check each lamp.

My '94 does that once in a while too, and of couse when I look at the bulbs they are working. I checked once in the reflection of the car behind me when the warning came on, and the d.s. turn/brake bulb was indeed out though. I got out of the car and went back to look at it and it worked...
I think it's just an intermittent bad contact when the tide is right and the moon is just so. You could try taking the bulbs out and cleaning the contacts inside the sockets and on the bulbs and see if that helps any...

according to the FSM, the total resistance of the circuit is measured, if the value is skewed you will get Check exterior lights

The Center Mounted Third Brake light is checked...

I had one fail and my car did the "check lights" error.

I'm not so sure about the 3rd light being checked. I just replaced both bulbs in the 3rd light last week. I've owned the car for over a year and only got the error once, when a side marker died.

On the 1st gens, the high-mount brake light is fed right off the BOO switch and not in the resistance wire circuit that detects the changes.
The front turn signals, high beams, and trunk marker lights are not monitored either...
I'm pretty sure the 2nd gens are the same, but would need to look sometime at the diagrams...

I know my 95 would throw the "check lights" if a bulb was burned out on the third brake light..

and the 93s or 94's used a different bulb than the standard sized bulb, one of those early models used the "peanut" bulbs...

Ndoghouse put a 93 third brake light on his 94 and the different bulbs caused the "check lights" error to pop up and not go away.

I looked at all the diagrams from '93-98 and the manuals don't show the third brake light in the circuit at all for the lamp out warning. Maybe the manual is wrong? It wouldn't be the first time, but it is showing the same for every year (seperate circuit off the brake switch...)

I always thought the third brake light was in the lamp out circuit....

I kNOW the Mark VII DID NOT have a check on the 3rd brake light, i got a 60 dollar ticket because of that.

Well anyway I replaced the 3rd light that was out and I still occasionally get the check lights when I hit the brakes  Both rear brake lights would seem to be working however when it throws the code I can't ask any cars behind me if I have a light out. Also every once in a while my left blinker does the fast blink like I have a light out and it's not the front as I can at least see the reflection in a car in front of me to know that one is working.

Probably have a corroded contact in that read blinker/brake/tail light.

Have you pulled the tail light and looked at the contacts?

Muck around with your 4-way switch too. It can be a loose connection in there causing it possibly.
My 4-way switch if I don't turn it off just right will make the turn signals do what yours do. It's gotten better as I use the switch once in a while now, but it had never been used before.
Same goes for the multifunction switch (the 4-way is in that too on top.)
Maybe it needs a cleaning or is wearing out now too?

Just wanted to update this for others to learn from. My check lights kept coming on when I git the brakes and the left blinker was fast with the font light working.

I finally got off my ass and took out the back light, pulled it out, re-installed it and bingo! The check lights warning has not come on again. It would seem just a bit of corosion was making the brake/blinker bulb intermittently loose contact.

It's FIXED :D

and the winner is.....XLRVIII ! Also, thanks to everyone for the input, it's always nice to know you guys are here!

Good deal, thanks for the update. Changing and cheking our lights is always a fun thing!

I know a few of you Hotties have moded your front side blinker lights to blink when the bliner is on. I want that, is there a tech article on how to do it? Better yet - anyone wanna do mine! lol :D

And comming back from Enlishtown just now I hit the brakes and Check Light came on!!!

This time I'm gonna try some Dielectric grease...

Give the little circuit that is right under the left trunk lid arm (flollow the wire cover down the left trunk lid hinge), see if there is any wear in those wires going into it. Sometimes a bad connection will be there due to opening and closing the trunk lid. That hard plastic covering will slowly cut into the wire casing.

Good luck!

I will give it a look but when I took the lense off last time I hit the binker and nothing, it didn't work. I then unplugged the bulb and plugged it back in, then hit the blinker and it worked. I did all this before I put the light back in so I am thinking it is the socket that is my problem.

you know where Im talkin - you may have to move the liner to see it..but usually not, keep at it hottie!

Well finally figured out what was making my damn rear light go out

It kept on going out and I would take the tail light assembly out and it would all of a sudden work again? It got to the point that it was doing it a couple times a day so I got my probe and checked the wires. Had power and ground at the wired and the base of the socket but couldn't get anything in the plug itself

So (and this is the fun part!) I took the socket out of the front of a 1995 Explorer (same thing it would seem  ) and spliced it in. Been working fine ever since.

Why a static socket like this would loose contact internally I cannot figure out?
