Believe it or not, my left headlamp's HID bulb is going out! it stays on for about 30 seconds flickering on and off, and just quits every single time. They werent very bright to begin with, since i bought them used off of LSUNV2. i thought these things were going to last for a while but i guess not. This is also pretty weird because i was just talking to Alax7 about HID bulbs and now this happens.

What's pretty cool about the HID bulbs i have on, is that they are 6k. im under the impression that LSUNV2 swapped the stock HID bulbs with 6k's. im not really sure what color the stock HID bulbs are but if they look like Halogen's, i totally do NOT want that.

So do you guys know of any reliable places online to buy from? I just don't want that OEM Halogen look at all. I would really like a Pure White color which is supposed to be 5-6k, just depends on the manufacturer. The whiter it is the better. If it has a little blue, i wouldnt mind that, as long as its not bleeding blue like 8k or 10k.

The OEM HIDs are 4300K and are the crisp white.

I love mine, would not go any bluer IMO.

So you have the OEM ballasts, but the bulbs are going out?

Well hm let me restate my case.

I have stock HID Headlamps. and The HID bulb seems to be going out.
im just looking for a good pair of HID bulbs.

but yeah i have the OEM Ballasts i guess you could say./////////////

so OEM is @ 4300k and produces a clear White bright light?

hmmm, if thats true then i wouldnt mind going OEM. where do you suggest to buy from. But yeah i still dont mind a little blue. either way whether bright white or a little blue tint is fine with me.

This is a bad photo of the OEM HIDs, but it is crisp white. I think higher than 5000K is where it starts to blue out.

I am not sure where to buy the bulbs, but I am sure you can find some online if you look good enough.

Hey, I guess I called it huh, +1 for me :D.....OEM color, 4300k, philips bulbs say 4100k though.Oem hid color is not halogen color or even close. 4300k is white and i think 5000k is a super white or something but after that gets blue.halogen vs HIDs.Also, here is a link to some bulb info.I dont know where to get philips bulbs though. I googled it and a few websites came up.

WHOA.............
Can anyone tell me if the stock hid headlight system runs on 35W or 55W?
Im just going to assume and expect the worst and say its 35w, but i really want to buy this 55w bulb! it would be so beasty!
http://www.retrosolutionsllc.com/servlet/the-408/D2R-55W-XENON-HID/Detail

but ill most likely have to go with the 35w...
http://www.retrosolutionsllc.com/servlet/the-407/D2R-35W-XENON-HID/Detail

either way ill be buying a GRADE A quality product. I have always trusted Retro-Solutions. I ran there 35w HID KIT through my Stock Halogen Headlights...and let me tell you that those things were UNBELIEVABLY bright. Definitely worth my money!

But yeah let me know what you guys think of these bulbs or if you have any better alternatives. *Also if anyone is interested in my previous HID KIT from Retro-Solutions, PM me. Again it is the 35W Digital HID Kit in 6k that they offer. IT was only used for 2 Months! I guarantee you will be the brightest around!

I was on that site yesterday.I'm pretty sure oem is 35w. I dont know what good a 55w bulb will do if your ballast isn't putting that out, but it might work I dont know. You can boost up your ballast to 55w though. Look it up in hid planet. Why not get a 55w or 75w ballast for your headlights if you want to upgrade. Sell your oem ballast on ebay and put in the 55w/75w one where the oem ballast goes.

The OEM HIDs are 35W.
I would switch the left and right bulbs and see if the problem moves with the bulb, or stays with the ballast. One of the problems with HIDs is diagnosing whether the problem is the bulb or the ballast.

good point JOEGR, i am going to do that asap. im still almost positive its the bulb though bc it doesnt shine the same color as the other bulb when it does manage to stay on for a bit.

I don't know why but I thought it was 42V......

Watts(W) and Volts(V) are different measurements. Stock is 35W.

Flickering makes me think it might be a wiring or ballast issue.

My passenger side bulb is flickering on warm up and going pink and then shutting off.

YAY!

For now, I am going to rig some D2S bulbs in there until I can get some new D2R bulbs since I have a set of new D2S bulbs for some bi-xenon projectors I have lying around. I guess if its that ballast that is bad that would suck, but I have some more of them floating around too.

If your bulb flickers and shuts off, it could be the ballast I guess. But if the bulb goes pink or flickers pink its about a 99% chance the bulb is done for.

This is a little off topic but I figured I'd ask it here.

I have stock HID headlights on my 03 and have noticed that my fogs are a bit more yellow. The lenses of my foglights are faded (which obviously affects the brightness of the light) but I have a pair of brand new fog lights with sylvania 9145 halogen bulbs. If I simply swap out the fog lights, will the new fogs with the sylvania 9145 halogen bulbs match (or at least be close to) the headlights or will I need a different bulb to get a similar look as the headlights?

Hope that makes sense and thanks for the help?

Short of putting HIDs in the fogs, you wont match the color or intensity at all.

If you put HIDs in the fogs, you will piss other drivers off. Ask me how I know this, ha.

Haha, smdandb2 is answering all my stupid lighting questions tonight..thanks!

I'm assuming I won't match, but any ideas how to get close or at least get a whiter color just with the use of a different bulb? I know sylvania isn't the best, but I can get a lot of sylvania stuff free so anyone know a "whiter" bulb that will work in the stock fogs?

You can get nokya bulbs. For a little more money, you can get some good hid matching bulbs like hoen. They are made for BMW but they have carious bulb sizes. There is also a similar brand but

http://www.hoen-usa.com/

You can always go with hids down there. And if people can use them on the lows without a problem I'm sure you can do it in the fogs as well. A few members on here have them on the fogs. I will try putting on bi-xenon projectors in the fogs when they arrive. I ordered them but shipping is lagging it

I appreciate the help Alax but I have no idea which of those bulbs would work. I went to the fog section of that site and browsed a bit but am even more confused.

Couple questions:
Are the bulbs on that site HID or just halogen purposely made to match/look like HID?
In your previous post you said some other members have HID in their fogs? Will a HID bulb work with the factory fog light wiring or do I need a conversion kit.

I know very little about lighting (which is probably pretty apparent by now) so your help is greatly appreciated.

Edit: I'm looking at lskoncepts and was wondering which Nokya will match the best? There are four varieties on there and a bunch of different models for each...
NOKYA Arctic Purple Stage 2 Headlight Bulbs
NOKYA Arctic White Stage 1 Headlight Bulbs
NOKYA Arctic White Stage 2 Bulbs
NOKYA Cosmic White Stage 2 Bulbs

I used both artic white and cosmic white nokya bulbs for the lows before going with stock hid headlamps. The difference between stage 1 and 2 is the watts. Stage 1 is stock wattage and stage 2 is a high wattage bulb. Cosmic is whiter than oem bulbs and with very little blue. Artic is white with more blue in i blue in it than the cosmic bulbs.

Here are some pictures comparing cosmic, artic and oem bulbs on my ls in the for sale section.

You can get more info on the nokya bulbs here

The hoen bulbs are halogen bulbs made for the fogs to match the stock low beam hid color. They have bulbs that fit in the lows as well and I have read they look real good.

You can't just stick a hid bulb in the headlight or fog lights, they use ballast to light. You can just buy a plug n play hid kit and stick it in the fogs to match your stock hids. You dont need to upgrade the wiring when using the 35w hid kits. 55w I thinks its recommended you do. Hid kits like these

or

35w hid kits are more than enough but if you must have them 55w are out there. 70w you should upgrade the wiring harness. Here is a link to 35w, 55w and 70w comparison.

I have 4300K HIDs in my fogs. When I first put them in I got flashed a lot, but I have not been flashed in a long time now. I am not sure what changed. I think it mostly has to do with my car being dirty all the time and the lights being really nasty... haha.

Short of HIDs though, most people WILL be able to tell the difference from blue bulbs to HIDs. Sorry, there is simply no halogen out there that will do it.

Yeah but the hoen are a good match, not perfect like getting hids.

I like the Hoens but no no halogens are an exact match. The blue bulbs look way better then stock halogens though.

And don't waste your money on 55W or 70W HIDs. The typically runner hotter and are less reliable then 35W. 35W HIDs producea lot more light then halogens.

just fyi, it was a bulb issue. i replaced them with new HID bulbs and now i can see the effin road!

lol Motor Sport. its some cheap ebay brand i guess. it was either i spend $16 with free shipping for some bulbs or $60 for some quality Retro-solutions. The ones i got from Motor Sport arent half bad, definitely brighter than my previous bulbs. im just getting used to actually seeing the road now hahaha
