changed my oil yesterday and i notice there was an oil leak before and after i replaced the oil filter and the drain plug and then i drove it for a little while and then it began to smoke so can anyone Help Me?

two things, when you replaced the filter did you make suer that the filter gasket of the old filter didn't stick on the adapter plate? That can cause a leak. The other thing is the oil filter plate has a gasket that goes bad and starts to leak. I'd start there.

i noticed that the oils leaking from the drain pluga area some where around there any ideas?

oil pan is probably rusting, try cleaning the threads with a wire brush and then put the plug back in.

Does the oil plug have its plastic washer on it? You may even want to get a new plug, the threads can wear and the seal can crack. But its odd to loose that much oil. Worth a shot, dealer item I think.

What oil did you use? 5W-20? Is is maybe the oil filter adapter gasket? When oil leaks it can travel a bit making it look like its leaking from somewhere else.

the oil im using is the 5w-30 and ill try the new plug and the gasket and the filter plate ok and i ll go from there

Should be using 5w-20 unless you are in a warm area, then 30 is ok - never-mind what the manual says, its wrong and a Ford TSB was issued to change to 5w-20 for all 4.6L. Being in NC, not a big deal but wanted to let ya know.

hey unity i changed the plug and found that its a small crack on the pan does anyone know how much and where i can get a new one?

I would try using that patch stuff they use for the gas tanks. Not sure if it'll work but its worth a try. I think replacing the pan is a real pain from what I've heard

Oh oh. A crack on the pan..... Two option, replace or repair. Repair is the best thing you can do, but the oil will have to be drained very well so it no longer leaks out. Then the area has to be extremely clean and paint removed. Then have someone weld or braze it. It should hold. It would be best to brush, sand and clean the rest and apply three coats of enamel based paint.

Replacement it not easy at all and requires the entire K-member (the thing the power steering rack attaches to) to come down. This means the suspension system comes along for the ride. This is a project, doable if you have a lift and a mechanically inclined. The problem being that even if you got all the bolts off, the pan has to come down a good distance - it will not slide back at all since the oil suction tube sit low in the pan and is attached to the block.

I would advise a braze job. Basically welding with brass. It works well and is easier to work with than welding. But the area has to be perfectly clean. Almost any shop can do it.

I used some JB Weld-type of stuff to patch mine. $3.99 and it Worked fine. Then again, your leak location and size may be different than mine was...
