Help with new Mufflers

First I want to say hello to everyone here!

I bought a 2003 Lincoln LS V8 (72k miles) one month ago and now I would like to get a better V8-sound.
It should not be too loud, so I think I just want to change the mufflers.

I already used the search function but I didn't find any threads about which mufflers are "direct fit" for the LS? I don want to cut or weld anything..

that doesnt make sense, you have to cut out your old mufflers to get new ones in place , most go with magnaflow mufflers or bassani (louder ) and x pipe
 
well that kinda makes sense...

they do make bolt on kits, however due to the extremely limited aftermarket with this car, they are full cat back systems only, not just mufflers or axle back systems.



so if you only want new mufflers, you will have to cut them off, then you really should have them welded back on... trusting clamps to that... no es bueno.

the magnaflow kit does sound nice, but if it is a little much, just mufflers is super easy, and good exhaust shop can knock this out no problems... cut them off, line new ones up, tack it up and make sure its straight, then just burn it in. on the lift to off the lift, 30 mins, $40.
 
he only said mufflers so I figured a catback exhaust was out of the question but yes magnaflow have a direct bolt on but 1Loudls covered most of what I was thinking , if anything a cold air intake will give a deeper idle and a nice growl when taking off
 
Wow, so many answers within that short amount of time!

Okay, I think I didn't express myself very good. I'm aware of that the old muffler needs to be cut out and the new one needs to be welded in. I want to try muffler exchange only first and if that is not sufficient, I will think about more modifications. So I will go to a muffler shop and let them install me the mufflers.

Are there any special Magnaflow mufflers which I should ask for?
 
You'll be happy with the muffler only job.. for maybe a year. Go all out.

I did 3rd cat delete, resonator delete, added x-pipe. Mufflers replaced with Magnaflow 11224, 4" tips out back. I wish I had done this since day 1.

After about 2-3 weeks the exhaust has quieted down. It's perfect now. No drone on the highway, whereas before the 3rd cat + resonator delete and x-pipe add, there was a bit of drone at 120km/h+.


FYI 11225s are 2.25" - you need the 11224s. Measure the inlets just to be sure, but I can almost guarantee yours will be 2" as well.
 
Thanks for the very detailed and nice proposal, but I really want a decent sound only, I don't want to need to shout when talking to my passengers ;-)

I was at the local muffler shop and he recommended me to exchange the resonators first. He said that exchanging the mufflers would only produce a more rattling sound. Can anybody confirm that?

I first started with just replacing the mufflers, and it got a good bit louder and a lot more muscle to the tone, did not get a single rattle. I later replaced the resonators with straight pipe, this made it a little bit louder, and it did have a change to the tone of the exhaust but I did start to get a little raspy at times.


the OEM mufflers are huge, I can't see just removing the resonators making that big of a difference with the stock mufflers, but they do a bit to mellow the sound down. and with there being such a lager choice in mufflers, this is the main choice that will determine how the car will sound. but if you are probably 90% good with how it sounds, and just want a tiny bit extra, then that might work for you.


exhaust is more of an art than a science (trust me there is plenty of science to it too...) as what sounds good to one person might not sound good to another. so if your looking for a very specific sound, you may need to try a couple of different things to get exactly what you want.
