I have 95 Lincoln Mark viii. The cruise control just stopped working. Checked all connections that were visible (electrical/vacumn) all looked ok. I noticed a black plastic cover on the drivers side fender well next to the brake master cylinder. There was a small plastic box on the side of the cover and on top it had "ECC test". Does this mean electronic cruise control test point? If so, what is the deal? Underneath the plastic cover there was a black hard plastic module about 2"X2" with a with a wire connector on it. Is this the module for the cruise control? Perhaps this needs replacing. If not part of cruise control, does anyone know location of cruise control componets? And or what can one do to fix this thing?

Any help would be appreciated
thanks

I think that the module that you're talking about, under the plastic cover, is the ignition module.

The EEC test plug is for retrieving engine fault codes.

Does your horn work? Does your air bag (restraint system) light flash when the engine is running? These two systems, as well as the cruise control switches, go through the clockspring in the steering column. The clockspring is basically just some wires coiled up that can break over time.

If you have any of these other problems, as well as the cruise control problem, you might have a bad clockspring.

Thanks for the reply!
The horn works and no flashing air bag indicator. I even checked the switch on brake pedal support bar. As best can be determined that connector is ok.I wonder if there is any thing else that can be checked. This problem appeared after Lincoln dealer installed new plugs and wires (it was a couple months after they worked on it that I tried the cruise control). If I knew where the componets were could check closer.

Thanks again for the reply.

The speed control servo is located inside the driver's side fender behind the plastic inner fender, forward of the wheel.

Did you check the fuse? Do both of your brake lights work? Does the speedometer work?

Those are the easy checks according to the shop manual.

Thanks Billcu for the reply. One of the first things I checked was the fuse. Will look for servo where you identifird. Does the shop mannual have any other checks? i have volt meters and stuff to check with.

Thanks again

The service manual has 15 pages of pinpoint tests and information on the cruise control.

The possible sources for speed control inoperative are listed as:

Blown fuse
Circuitry
Deactivator switch
Stoplight switch
Burnt stoplamp bulb
Speed control actuator switch assembly
Vehicle speed sensor
Speed control servo
