Help! LS Battery Removal

Hi guys, I was trying to help out my uncle and replace the battery in his 2004 Lincoln LS and we couldn't get the damn thing out. The long bolt holding it down was not co-operating. He couldn't find the owner's manual before the local parts stores closed, so we gave up for the night. I did a search and I see you should use the OE battery if possible, but I couldnot find anything to hlep me get that bolt out.

From one description I found, it looks like a regular old bolt, nothing special about it, except that it's so long. But when I try to turn it, it resists, then just snaps! The whole clamp bar is loose, but I can't back the bolt out. What am I doing wrong? Anyone have any help?

It seems like it has some sort of quick release, but after searching the forum, I'm not so sure anymore.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

its in the trunk not the engine bay, thats the only help you should need....
sorry i had to get my smart ass remark in for the week.
 
Looks to me you snapped of the hold-down bolt and need some help to remove the broken stud. This comes a bit late but you should have been moving it back and forth a few times as the bolt might have been corroded.
Also make sure you buy a battery with the proper vent tube otherwise you end up with a rusted trunk.

You should also know that the long bolt goes through the trunk floor and the end sticking through may be therefore rusted. If you take loose the horizontal bolt going into the panel above the battery, you may be able to rotate the hold-down and clear everything out of the way. Otherwise soak the threads into the trunk floor in penetrating fluid.

Probably rusted to hell on the bottom. If you look under the car you can see where the bottom of it sticks out. Try spraying the bottom of it with WD40/PB blaster and see if that helps. If not, cut it off.
 
They really wanted to use every Jag feature they could on the LS huh... The only other car with trunk mounted batteries from the factory are Jags...

Thanks, but we tried that. With the size of the clamp holing down the tab on the bottom of the battery, that's just not going to work. :(

This sucks! :mad: I've never had this much trouble getting a battery out and I'm used to dealing with cars that are 15-20 years old.

Saturn IONs do too. I think the Cobalt and G5 do too, they're on the same platform. The HHR is on that platform too. I know Bonnevilles and Park Avenues had them under the rear seat as well.

The trunk is a very good place to put them. They last longer away from the heat of the engine. Several GM cars put the battery under the rear seat.
 
Crisis was averted! :wrench

I didn't break anything. That snapping seemed to be just the retainer nut holding the bracket on the nut. I crawled underneath while my uncle turned the bolt. It was moving slowly with some resistance and it would just snap, but it was still moving. He kept going and it came out. I sprayed a little WD-40 on it, but I'm not sure it needed it. It was corroded a bit, but the threads were all OK. There was a bit of the white crusty corrosion near the top.

We got the battery out and drove to the nearest Ford dealer and the parts department was open. We were suprised at how many other places were closed at like 10:30am on a Sat at Christmas time! We put it back ina nd now he has some issues with resetting everyhting, but otherwise it seems all good.

Why the hell did they paint the neg (-) connector Red? Or put red grease on it anyway. I got it all over my hand! :mad: Otherwise the install was pretty good.

Oh ya and the battery listed for $140 retail, but the guy gave it to my uncle for $115 +tax. And he didn't even have to tell the guy he's an electrician at Ford on permanent lay-off.
