The code i pulled is 214 Cylinder Identification Circuit Failure. I looked around on the net a bit and found that this is probably the Camshaft Position Sensor. Is this correct or could it be something else? If it is the Camshaft Position Sensor where is it located and how hard is it to change??

Thanks For The HELP!
Adam

Sounds like you have a bad cam position sensor.

Its a really easy part to change, it's in the front engine cover up by the heads. Buy a motocraft sensor, everything else is junk.

replaced the cam position sensor and still have the check engine light coming on what else could this be?

It could be a few things. Crank position sensor or even if the PMC is messed up.

Does it ever have a problem starting?

When this first started the engine was hard to start but this went away now the car runs fine just don't like seeing that orange light drives me nuts. So i will try the crank sensor. Also my car has a chip i have taken it out since this has started thinking that was the problem. How would i know if it is the PMC?

Thanks

I take it you pulled the battery when you yanked the chip? That shoudl have cleared things. But the crank sensors fails very often on these cars, it may be worth replacing just to do so really. Its not too expensive a part, but a bit of a paint to replace. The AC compressor has to be moved a bit.

Ya i disconnect the bat to remove the chip and when i replaced the cam position sensor and the light came right back on so i will try the crank sensor and let ya know thanks for the help!

So i replaced the crank sensor last night still have the check engine light coming on. it seams to be getting worse now when you first give the car some gas it falls on its face then picks right up i don't know what is going on. My mark is a 1994 with 135K just replaced the fuel pump and filter so those are out. I have not pulled the code again yet but I'm sure its the same code. Any suggestions?

Thanks Adam

"214" is an ignition problem (OBD 1). Have you checked your plug wires and plugs, maybe even the coil pack ?

The wires were replaced before I bought the car. I put new plugs in at 100k I don't think they are the problem the car runs purfect ofter then leaving from a stop or from an idle.

Ignition Relay?? Sounds like an ignition problem.. I dont know what do guys think about a Main Ignition Relay.. I am OBDII so this is not my setup.. just a thought from working on older obdI honda's back in the day.

So I have replaced the Cam And Crank Sensors and cleaned the connections on them both and also cleaned the MAF sensor The car has a new fuel pump and filter but still getting this light and code just pulled the code today after all this has been done and got the same (214) I don't think the plugs or wries are the problem or the coil packs for that fact the car runs fine just drove it on a 100 mi trip no problems other then that Check engine Light is on. The light goes off when the car is at an idle and at WOT some times the car wants to die after coming to a stop and Hesitates at leaving a stop. What Else could this be?

Iac

I know this sounds like the IAC is bad but would that give me this code??? Also I went to napa to get the cam sensor they said they had to order it when it came in it was the wrong one the one that they ordered the plug came out at 90 degrees where the one i had was straight they told me this was the one it called for they had the one that matched mine but told me it was for a 1990 Lincoln told them there was no such thing as a 1990 mark VIII and that the DOHC 4.6 only in the mark VIII but they crossed the #'s and said this was it so maybe this is the wrong cam sensor im at a loss.

I would no suspect so. But the IAC is a weird thing. It defiantly causes a rough idle when bad and that may be read as a mis-fire.

So i finally fixed this CID 214 code the wire was broke inside the insulation right at the cam sensor. Now i have a new problem It seams that once the engine gets hot It will die just like you turned the key off. Than sometimes you can get it to re start but its a PAIN in the A** to start. let it set over night and fires right up. Any thoughts?? This all started right after I fixed the broken wire going to the cam sensor.

I think we have a new record. It took him 5 years to change the cam sensor.

WOW that was helpful and you didn't even read the post and get it right!!

I had changed the Cam Sensor the wire was broke inside the insulation that took me so long to find. Also if it helps you with the time line of my repairs the car was my fathers. He passed away four years ago and the car has been in storage. So i would suggest that if you don't have something helpful to say than don't post!!! I replied to my old thread so people searching for the problem with the cam sensor could see what I had found wrong.

Now on to the car I'm guessing its a coincidence that this happened all at the same time. Tonight I'm replacing the Crank Sensor with a OE one i will post the results.

Thank you to all the people that helped.
