Help: 2002 LSE just lost all tranmission fluid at once.

I think it was all of it. So at 12 years and 167k miles of 100% complete troublefree transmission issues (never a transmission issue ever), I stopped at the shopping center today and as I pulled into the parking spot, noticed smoke from underneath. Shut her down, got out, and noticed transmission fluid dripping heavily from somewhere above or near the transmission fluid pan area. 30 minutes later the drip had stopped as a large puddle of transmission fluid was on the ground. Didn't even risk starting the engine, so I simply called a tow truck and had her towed to my local independent shop that does all my work. WIll see what they say tomorrow. (its night time here). Anyways, prior to this zero leaks from the transmission. Just checked my driveway from this morning and not a drop of fluid at all. Seems as if something gave away all of a sudden? Didn't hit anything, haven't even really driven her all that hard lately.

Any ideas?
 
Sounds like you lost a seal. Front of the trans or rear? See where it's coming from.

I did NOT even think about that last night (tired) when this happened. Automatically assumed it was from the transmission because it def was reddish non motor oil fluid leaking on the ground right around that transmission pan area, so to play it safe, had it towed the 4 miles to the shop. THANK you for the reminder. Just called the shop to give them a heads up re: proper fluid type in case it is the PS pump or a hose...and that makes since as a hose would be more likely to go all at once vs a seal on a transmission.
 
I had a P/S leak out of the little pressure sensor, sprayed right onto the exhaust manifold. The P/S takes the same Merc V the trans does.

Shop just called and confirmed it's the PS system and NOT the transmission. Said they are cleaning the underside up and first want to try replacing the "switch", as it appears the pressurized spray was coming from that. They will then test. I said for $120 total parts and labor, lets try that route first. So thats in progress
 
and confirmed. Picked up the LSE yesterday from the shop. Switch looked fine just visually looking at it (i.e. no external cracks, splits, O ring was intact, etc) , but obviously something "blew" from within. Tech said when they filled up the power steering reservoir with ATF, started the car, turned the steering wheel side to side? ATF shot out of that old OEM 12 year old 167k mile switch. LOL. Replaced it, refilled the reservoir with Mercon V, and as of today, still so far so good. Thanks much for the quick tips and responses guys.
