well my trac lok showed up today (late) and i decided to test fit it with my 4.10's and my pumpkin. when i took my trac lok out of the box i felt gritty, which i later found out was metal shavings, Is that normal? then i put the pinion bearing on the pinion (which got stuck on there) and test fitted it into the pumpkin, only to find out that it was too short. ( which one is the right one???) another question is what other things do i need to complete the package. i have 1 pinion bearing, the 2 bearings and the little ring cup thingys that sit under the caps, and a few shims. I know ill also need a bottle of friction modifier from Ford and a gasket for the pumpkin itself.

the pinion bearing should sit all the way down on the shaft. its a tight fit.
also make sure the pinion depth is shimmed correctly before pressing the pinion bearing on fully.

this is why i just bought a loaded diff. looked like a pita, and easy to get wrong.

Dude you need to ask me ?'s direct on this. It seems like you have never messed with a rear before. There are alot of things to know. You never stated if posi was new or used. Also you said you where having this pro set up is that still the case? I sold you all parts marked and grouped together. I also don't see the pinion shim under bearing in your pic. Main thing is that pinion bearing needs to be pressed on all the way with pinion shim underneath. (this also may not be the one I set out of old housing this changes when parts are changed, set up) I sent you all pinion bearings and all carrier bearings and all shims all marked.

frank you are absolutly correct, i have never messed with one of these before. the posi is used, but the seller claimed less than 30 miles on it. I am still having a pro set it up like i said before, because i am almost completely in the dark on rears. What i really need to do is buy a lit with all the shims and paint for the gears. does the front pinion bearing usually need to be replaced? You guys are great, please bear with ignorance when it comes to rears

edit- after looking at it again i just panicked about to pinion shaft length, because i was a dumbass and didnt get the bearing all the way down

I drove the car and the rear was quiet and filled with lube when I tore it down. You have all the "races" that match the bearings. Some peeps like to spend the money on all new bearings. I also stick aton of gears in rears reusing bearings no problem. You drop it off at gear place and they will have all stuff to set them up.

if it was me, i'd put new bearings no matter what.if you have something apart that has to go back together and its cheap to put new stuff on, do it. and the fact that you didn't even recognize the pinion bearing needed to be pressed on, man leave the rear to the pros thats something that if it is the slightest bit off, and i mean .01" it will chew itself to death.and a loaded diff is put together already.kinda like a loaded gun, the stuff is already to shoot.
