The hydraulic fan pump on my 2001 LS V8 has been making a whining noise for the past few months. I think I need to replace it soon. Where can I buy the pump and how hard is it to replace? There doesn't look like much space to work around the pump.

well I replaced mine with another used one. BAD IDEA. This is a very pain in the butt job. It took about 4 hour to do. I priced the pump and its 350 and the solenoid it $85. I just bought an electric fan and it cost 280 and took just as long to do. You may want to replace the pump cause your fan IS working. But if you want to save money.
You will have to remove the altenator and probably the wheel. There is one bolt that has a hyd. line in the way and you have to use a wrench making 1/8turns at a time. Then after its off putting it back on is no picnic. Starting that bolt is awful because it has to be one of the first ones you start. MAKE SURE THEY ARE STARTED STRAIGHT BEFORE USING A WRENCH. I often thought it was started and it wasn't. Hope that helps some.

I was going to change to an electric fan but what would I do about the pump? The whining noise drives me crazy and if the pump seizes the belt will also break most likely. Is there a shorter belt that can be used to bypass the pump?

yes there is a shorter belt. Mine is starting to make noise too. I will be going the same route soon. I belive its a 77mm shorter belt. I will look into this.

I will look into it as well. I would love to do away with the hydraulic pump setup altogether. Does the electric fan that you have keep the engine cool
even when you have the A/C on for a long time? How many CFM's does your fan blow? I was thinking that a 3000 cfm fan should do OK.

well I don't know about the a/c its about -5 here right now and snow on the ground. Not to mention the a/c has to be refilled. But I am pretty sure its going to work its a 3300 cfm fan.
