Has anyone ever thought about trying this???

Thats a crazy high price. There are a few shops here that can rebuilt your current alt. and upgrade it to a 200A for much cheaper.
 
I bought one on line a couple of years ago, around $200 from a company on ebay who sells 200 amp units-they were in Tennessee, I think-it has been great, does 130 amps at 1000RPM, I did install a new battery when I installed it and have had no problems at all since-no core either, and I got it fast-still have the original alternator (backup) but I think it was a good deal-I'll research it if you want, I am happy with it.
 
Do you guys all have monster stereo systems or something else that needs that kind of power? Sounds like overkill
 
I havent clicked on the link but have you checked out Nathan from Excessive Amperage? he built me the holy mother of alts. 390A for about $300 and yes I do keep killing alts but its for a different reason.

Yes, we like our stereos but also our cars are wired to the gills with electronics. Literally, at idle, I notice that the compressor bogs down if I put my foot on the brake pedal. Something as simple as the taillights can bring the power down that much. I'd like an alternator that puts out more amps at idle just for reasons such as this. I've had my alternator checked several times and they always say it's still in good working condition, so I just believe that the factory alternator is just not cutting it anymore.

I've been dabbling in the mobile electronics industry for several years now and that's usually the first recommendation that's made when adding any extra electrical accessory that's going to demand anymore amps. Adding batteries does no good unless you provide a way to charge them.

Dont leave out the BIG 3!!!
Sometimes power problems can be solved by doing the big 3.
 
You need to do the big three before any alternator upgrade could become remotely effective...

This place builds awesome cable if you are patient... its a one man show and the turn around is kinda slow.

Why the need for such a huge alternator? I installed a 1000 watt amp in my friends mark VIII along with a set of dual voice coil 10" subs. It bangs so hard that it busted the rear view mirror right off. He runs the amp really hard & likes his bass loud. He has never needed to upgrade his alternator.

Just what kind of amps are you guys running? Are your alternators dying or is this just an upgrade?

I'm just looking at an upgrade. Right now my daily driver just has a 500 watt monoblock pushing a 12". It's loud enough for my daily driver, but once I get the 96 back, I plan on building up a system for it and it wouldn't hurt to have the extra amps there if they're needed.

Using heavier gauge cable to supplement the factory wires and connect:

Alternator to the battery positive
Engine To chassis
Chassis to battery negative

...all in the name of lowering resistance in your electrical system.
 
I measured out my factory cables and am ordering up the replacements from the site I listed above, I'll post up pics when I get them.
