Apparently the issue is caused by several different things. Not going to know what the deal is till I go get the codes.

The message just came on once. I was parked and I started the car and the message came up. From what I read most of the time it comes up and blinks the overdrive light.

Anyhow, the saga continues .... :(

edit: you know what... I think it could be something bad... yesterday I was in traffic and there was a wierd sequence of events with hitting the gas, downshifting, coming off the gas .. upshifting and I felt a slight shudder while the car was shifting into OD.

I've known my transmission has been on the way out for a while. Hitting the OD button at 60mph causes a downshift that is slightly TOO rough.

I'll update later.

i would liek ot understand how the trans triggers a code. Is there a pressur sensor? Would it sense it is not shifting properly?

Maybe it can detect excessive slippage somehow. My guess is that it's a sensor/electrical.

Could be the same as the Conti "check trans" code, where the sensor is reading too much Ohms, just hit reset is the fix

You have chit ton of issues with your car. Has it ever run right? You come here every week with a thread about how your Mark is fvcked up.

That's funny.:D

I don't mean to make fun, but you do seem to have some rare problems with your car.:)

Except for one ABS module meltdown, I just seem to get just the more common failures with the 5 Mark VIII's I've owned. Knock on Burled Walnut.:shifty:

I'm curious what the code will be.

No codes other than a p1518 code. Go figure. Dunno what to make of that. If the message came up it should have stored a code. Correct?

I thought I might have cut a wire or something from the transmission when I pulled the dash.

The guy I bought it from said it sat for 6 months at his girlfriends house before it was sold. Though I don't believe he told me the whole story with this car.

I need to do a carfax badly.

Granted I don't drive mine a lot, but third gear went out and I had to replace a leaky radiator and thats it other than normal maintenance. I have had the car since 04.

Dude I would have sold that car so long ago. It is hands down the most problematic Mark I have ever seen and I knew one that blew three motors. LOL

I have had that issue twice on a Mark and both times it was VSS related. First one the wires to the VSS had melted jackets and would touch. The second one the VSS was actually going bad.

Sapper, its differnent from the Conti trans. The conti has a different control unit and temp sensors. Its TC lockup solinoid pulls more power as it gets older and the Conti computer reads that as a fault.

To a degree I understand everyone here when they say these kinds of things. The car has been troublesome. It's a running joke between my friends and I. AKA: the saga... but you guys all know that when you do work yourself it's not like you are breaking the bank doing the upkeep on your car. Just the other day I had a guy in traffic flag me down and want to buy my car.. but a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush they say. Right now I've tracked the grimlins in this car down, I know it's in's and out's and that's worth quite a few bucks to me.

Like Greg said. I have done enough work on the car to expect it to drive another 100k miles so at the moment I don't mind the upkeep.

Laser: you said your problem twice was the VSS. That's the vehicle speed sensor right? It's what I've read to be a problem and I've heard about it on other forums. I was hoping having moved the dash/put new carpet in and such caused a frayed wire (though I did look as well as I could before putting the dash back togeather for any fraying).

Also: about 6-7 months ago I was having issues with my speedometer. There was one point where I was driving for 5 minutes at freeway speeds where the speedometer stayed at 0mph. Usually when I go 65 mph it 'ticks' between 65mph and ~68mph. It could definitely be a problem.

Could someone point me in the direction of the VSS? (i'll do a search also.. no worries)

Also: Right now I'm getting 19mpg on surface roads of a big city (no freeway driving). I never thought I would be getting that with this car. It's pretty good but I want a bit better... having a p1518 code I think the next thing is pulling the intake and cleaning the IMRC's. Wish I could find a full writeup on that.

You need to do a carfax?? If the last owner didn't tell YOU about any problems, why would he have told them?

I'll look on Mitchel for some diagrams for your VSS for you.

Jeeze. I totalled mine, let it sit for 2 years, and I have things that magically work BETTER afterwards!!

Tough luck...

Hence the reason I'm not going to buy a carfax. Just waiting for a kind salesman at a dealership or something to give me one.

Thanks

Fluxuating speedo is either a bad speedo or bad wheel speed sensor.

If you pulled the dash, check for a pinched wire at the bottom of the dash where the wires go into the trans tunnel. Been there, done that. ;)
