I'm was checking my coolent level today and I seen this grease like gunk in the tank pasted to the sides. Is this supposed to be? What is it?

Tell us how many miles is on the fluid.

I am NOT a believer of 100K or more coolant changes. In my expereince you will get some scum deposit after many miles, usually 50K or more. I believe fluid should be changed well before 100K, at least 50K. But then I am going by visual check. Realistically you should use a hydrometer to measure the specific gravity of the fluid which will tell you whether it is up to strength. But like I said I go by whether it looks yucky or not.

Now then, if you have low miles and the fluid is relatively fresh you may have a head gasket leak blowing combustion or oil into the coolant. You should also check your oil for a milky appearance especially under the fill cap or the dip stick. This might mean you are also getting water into the oil, that's bad.

My guess is that you just have old coolant. Over time you will get some scum which I am GUESSING is just residue from the antioxidants and lubricants doing their work. You might also get a tiny bit of combustion gasses getting apst the gaskets.

Tell us how many miles.

Just my opinion,

Jim Henderson

Great! Well I only have about 3k on my coolant. My container had to be replaced not to long ago.

Also I have posted about smoke comeing out from under the hood when I used seafoam last week, the wind was blowing over the car so I know it wasnt from the exhaust it was definetly from the engine.. My guess is a cracked head or gasket leak.

Anyone else?

Thanks by the way, JIM!

Do you know if the cooling system was flushed when they replaced the tank and how many miles were on the coolant?

It is possible that your cooling system was just gunked up and needed a flush after replacing the tank. Depending on who did the work, it is possible they just put a new tank on and refilled with coolant or water without checking if it needed to be flushed.

I am trying to avoid a blown head gasket in these recommendations since I like to fix the cheap easier stuff first.

You said the smoke from Seafoam was not coming out of your exhaust? Where was it coming out of? Was it just spilled on the manifolds or was it coming from somewhere on the engine? Like along the heads, ouch, or under the intake manifold etc.

Also have you checked your oil for water contamination? Contaminated oil will make a gooey mess that looks like either whipped cream to chocolate fudge depending on how dirty the oil is. It will usually show up under the fill cap, down in the valve covers below the fill tube or in the dipstick and tube. Let's hope you do NOT find any "mousse" in any of these places.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Didn't spill nothing, I used the vacuum line like everyone said and then I used a funnel to pour it into the oil. It seemed ( the smoke ) to have been coming out somewhere just behind the drivers side of the motor.

Did the coolant not look like it should, meaning, did it look kinda like chocolate milk? If so, that's a head gasket. But...could also be that someone prior to you threw some "stop leak" stuff into the system..?
