I like base/clear better... almost fool proof. You could probably get a cheaper paint, then get a really really good clear, and make it look amazing with a little work. I can't wait to paint something again.
My buddy who owns a body shop and has been a painter for 40 years plus hated when they took away laquer. He loved painting with it and that is all he ever wanted to use. He did a freinds 67 Malibu in Black. 3 weeks to paint the car he layed down so many thin coats and was there a shine on that car BEFORE it was cut. Waited 6 months before it got the cut and polish, freaking incredible after that and to this day the paint on that car looks new. That was 1995.
If you know how to use the stuff clear is only needed for protection. Or maybe now with the new formulas you don't need clear, not sure, but the old laquer was a very brittle paint. Check the link of the cars he does now at another guys shop another friend of mine I know they are chevs but hey they are beautiful cars.
