GEN 2 with LSD?

BTW, what's up with these roundabouts popping up all over the place? We just got two new ones installed. They are such a pain! They tried a couple of painted ones a while ago but have since painted proper lines!

You should try it in an 18 wheeler. Most aren't bad. Just remember, the vehicles in the circle have the right of way. Kansas loves those.

Hey! and no skid pad testing buster!

So a question with this...after the install what goes on with the Traction Control?

Do you have it shut off with a tune, or doesn't it really affect it?

I have a 1st Gen and a spare 8.8 Trac-Lok and am really thinking of doing this. My F150 has the TL and my older Ranger had it, love it, and with the Iowa winter it's almost a need.

why would you have the TC shut off???

the traction control is only activated(not counting power sliding sidways or advanced trac), when the car senses wheel spin, with a limited slip rear end, you should have much better traction, and a lot less of just one of the wheels spinning. so the traction control should just be kicking on a lot less.

>its been tried, it wont happen.

a little searching would have shown this and is why people with 2nd gen are buying 1st gen carriers, its surely not because we like buying extra part... (not really any searching, more reading since the two biggest rear end threads were linked on the very first page
)<

I read both of the long postings and have spent hours researching all the possible conversions that have been done. Stating it wont happen for the Gen 2 carrier isn't a solution.

I cross over from the Jaguar forum because I've found that the LS owners here often take different approaches to upgrades than member on the Jaguar forum.

There are several Jaguar STR forum members that are working with DTS (Drive Train Specialties) to get a LSD fitted into the Gen 2 Carrier. If this works out the LS community will have another option getting LSD.

I have 2 Jaguar S-types, an STR with the Gen 2 carrier and a 2000 S-type with the Gen 1 carrier with and LS3 Camaro Engine installed. I will eventually be putting in either a Cobra or Explorer carrier in to the Gen 1 car.

I would like to get LSD in my STR, thus my interest in these postings. I suppose if I find the extra money and time, I can build up a complete rear suspension sub-frame assembly with a 8.8 carrier fitted. All it takes is time and money.

To me, the information posted on this forum is invaluable, but one sure has to read through a lot of side-bar comments to glean the good information.

Well, I was trying to save you the trouble tijoe...LOL!

I have a question about the Gen I and Gen II differential mounting bolt pattern on the aluminum covers. Has anyone measured the bold spacing and location parallel to the center linE of the 10 bolt mounting pattern? Are they the same width apart? are they offset? Are they aligned to the center line of the pinion and axels? Could a Standard Cobra or 8.8 cover work? Are the mounting bolt pads farther or closer to where the cover bolts to the carrier housing?

Thanks.

Joe

STR didn't come with an LSD from the factory? Fail.

your right, being on here for a while i have seen at least two different people (both far more mechanically inclined than myself) have tore them apart and showed why it wont work and what clearance issues were causing it, so they found out the easiest way to get a traclok in an LS was to just use 1st gen parts, and bolt it all right up with out having to source weird or unusual parts.

so is this custom LSD going to be cheap, doubt it, and with the newest of our cars being going on 7 years old, there would be very little interest in an option that cost more than the few hundred dollars that a used dif, traclok, rebuild kit, axels and a little bit of time cost, unless it will also offer any kind of real improvements like the use of non standard grear

yup, there is a few gold threads and a bunch of useless half full threads created by people who refuse to search. kinda like any other forum, except for the few with nazi admins that spend all day erasing and booting people

why would you expect it to, ford always seems to half ass its performance cars, unless Carroll puts his name on it.

Supercharged with brembo brakes.

An LSD is cheaper than either of these.

oh I know, never really understood why it was that they half assed, just really used to it by now. I think its silly that every LS, Bird, and S-type didnt come with it.

the mark viii actually came with the 8.8 you guys steal parts from, and we didn't get one either!

my guess, the LSD does make the car more tail happy in the corners. and, well, that's just not what dumb american drivers are used to.

americans are used to understeer, not oversteer.
i have always seen understeer described as "safer" than oversteer. more thinking involved when the back end kicks out in a corner.

so it was more expensive, and a liability they thought they could overcome with electronic traction control devices. so we didn't get it.

and after driving an LSD'd car for this long. i can't stand driving cars without them.

still could have been an option.
most mustangs don't have LSDs as well.
and they were available (standard? i'm not sure. our XR7 has one.) on Supercoupes and XR7s as well.
supercharged, but not exactly race/track cars either. and the XR7 was a mercury.

Blame the dumb Americans!

doesn't need to be a race car

for a lot of the US population, it would make this a much more capable car in the winter.

TC and AdvanceTrac are supposed to take of that. Having driven around a wet skid-pad with the loud pedal floored I can tell you Advancetrac is something else.

sounds like somebody's got a case of the "supposed to"s

while TC and AdvanceTrac does a great job keeping the car under control, they dont do crap for getting the car going from stops in slushy snow and other slick sh!t.

Actually, I was wondering the same thing. Never had both LS & Mustang housings together to fully compare the two.

LSD in Gen II update: Attempt to put LSD in Gen 2 Jaguar S-type housing by DTS in Michigan: FAILED!

As the saying goes: Back to the drawing board!
