gear shift

I Assume that you might have a Continental with a Floor shift, probably a 97 and up. I had an issue with many of these cars with the floor shift that the buttun doesn't want to punch threw and you have to push really hard for it to go to release the shifter, It's usually a dirty shift lock that has trouble letting loose or that the cable connected to the button is just dirty and needs some lube. I noticed this more of an issue during the winter.

It's all i can think of but we need more info!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

its actually near the steering wheel and its 94 conti. 4 some reason it gets locked up

I'm not familiar with those years, but if it gets locked up, then your shift lock may be dying. You know, that lock that disengadges the second you hit the brake pedal to release the shifter into gears. It's more of a safety feature that prevent the shifter to be shifted if the brakes aren't applied.

This is my best guess. By how you described, sounds like it doesn't happen all the time, do you apply the brakes every time U shift from park to any other gear???.

they also have a shift lock mechanism...(the column shift) check it and its probably bad/dirty. Also, make sure your brake lights are working when you step on the pedal.. my cougar wouldn't shift out of park either, the shift lock was preventing it... the wire to the brake switch was broken at the switch.
