gear select data error

Ive been having a few issues with my car, but my question is about the error message. Every now and then I will hear a beep, look down and see the gear select data error. It turns off so fast though im not even able to see the whole thing. So it comes on and goes off right away. And its only happened two or three times in the past month.

What does this message mean?
Why would it only come on so intermittently?

These tend to be referred to as the mystery beeps some get from time to time. I myself have never gotten one. Every message could be different. Usually they result from a communication error in the system. If you get a scanner you can check the message to see what it said and access if you need to look into it further.
