Gas Tank!!

Well, I knew my Mark liked to suck down the gas especially when I like to put my foot in it, but I think I finally confirmed my suspicions of a leaking gas tank.

I filled up with $25 last night, And that gave me a little over 10 gallons I think.

I drove ONLY 17 miles, and my car read just a hair under a half of a tank!!! :mad:

I had parked probably halfway through those miles for about 45mins-1hr.

Drove back home and I was 5 miles from home when I looked at the fuel gauge.

Are leaking tanks common on these cars???
 
Are you sure the fuel level sending unit isn't bad? Or maybe the gauge?

Typically, you can smell a leaking fuel tank... especially one that loses 1/2 of it's capacity that quickly.

Why don't you go top it off and see how much fuel it will take.

I'm going to keep a closer eye on it now, but before I didn't think anything of it.

But has anyone had a leaking tank on these cars?
 
The tanks are usually plastic polymer. If its leaking its due to impact, which means it would be LEAKING a lot.
 
Ya, but you would notice. And there are only two I think. One for cross-flow and the other for intake spout connection.
 
I did fill up once and park it, taking note of how much gas i had. Went inside, went to bed. woke up for work and went out to the car and it had a little over 3/4 of a tank when it was FULL last night and it is only 4.9 miles to the nearest gas station I go to...

Something has to be up....

And you're right.. I should smell gas... but I don't. Only when I start it, lol
 
That quickly??

My car sat from September to March with the evap lines disconnected and I lost an unnoticeable amount of gas....
 
Are you parking on level ground? I park on an incline, sometimes the car will sit for two to three weeks(most of the time)between drives. The float for the fuel guage will sometimes stick giving me a false reading, the guage will start low and read higher as I drive when the float unsticks.
 
why dont you fill it up all the way. then go straight home. park it for the night and in the morning go straight to the gas station and if it takes like 10 gallons you know your fuel sending unit is ok.

If it only takes like a gallon or 2 then you will need a sending unit/float assembly.
 
Now thats a good idea. If you dont smell and see gas I bet its the sending unit. That much gas would be dripping at a regular rate and I would think leave something on the ground.
 
I agree with everything said here. And I will try that tomorrow night. I do park on level ground... well maybe a few degrees of incline leading up to the garage but VERY unnoticable.

Of course now that you say sending unit, I am starting to believe that because I can run that thing until the gauge is empty and the car even believes its out of gas and It doesnt die... or atleast I havent ran the last drop out of it yet. My '94 GT will totally get pissed off at me if I run it close to the empty line with a 255lph pump and Mark Viii 24# injectors :D
