so im pretty sure my alternator is about to go. driving like normal my dash lights and sh!t are fine but when i go wot they get bright as f#ck and my climate control unit thing shuts off. my deck and amp stay on. Im gonna take my volt meter to it tomorrow in the light but does that sound like an alt issue?
 
prolly, these alts don't like high rpm.
never seen that issue though.
my lights dim at high rpm.
 
Voltage regulator. Ive seen that happen a couple times. Sappers 93 did that not too long ago. It was showing over 17 volts above 2000 RPM.
The electronics like a solid 14.5 volts but above 16 they may start to let the magic smoke out.

But i'd say anything over 15 is to much for a non upgraded electrical.
 
My car is doing the same only not at high rpm, just does it randomly. I would definitely say replace the alternator. I'm doing mine tomorrow, so hope i'm right.
 
I've seen this happen when one of the two voltage regulator brushes wears out completely the alt full fields often to over 15 volts. I've also seen the opposite when one or both wear out and the alt kills itself trying to full field resulting in 5-10 volt output.

Happened to me last fall, she was putting out 17.5V and cooked the battery till it popped acid all over my engine bay. Luckily I had Sodium bicarbonate handy and dusted the engine with it. I had it rebuilt for $80, runs like a dream now.
