Fuel Pressure Regulator

Wondering if anyone knows if there's a resistance test for the fuel pressure regulator. I'm wondering if that's what's causing my intermittent hard start issue. SOmetimes no amount of cranking will start the car. It sounds like it almost wants to fire up, but doesn't. Some days it starts perfectly. Once running, it runs perfect. New fuel pump with plenty of pressure, getting power to injectors, getting spark. Cleaned the IAC valve. I would just replace the FPR if it were a cheap part, but rockauto has them for around 120. Wanna be sure before I throw a part at it.

maybe its the iac valve
 
I have the shop manuals, just can't find if there's an ohm resistance between the pins on the regulator, or if I am supposed to run a wire from the plug to the sensor on one pin, and use the multimeter on the other two...

I'm thinking it's not the IAC because when the car does start, I do not have to depress the accelerator partially (which if that were the case, I would suspect the IAC valve). Unless it's a marginal failure or something.

yeah i just read alot that sometimes cleaning the iac temp. fixes a issue, so maybe its time for a replace since its already been cleaned but it could be something else too, like a coil haha
 
From what I found, there is no testing on it.. But it's not really clear..

Possible hard start causes:
(4)Defective IAC
(2)Dirty/Defective MAF
(1)Restrictive exhaust system
(3)EGR Valve open

I numbered for what to check first.. They generally go from least expensive to check to most..
You said something about your cats going bad so that could cause your problem..
 
Next time it won't start, tap the idle air bypass valve with a hammer. See if it starts then. Also, when it won't start have you tried holding the gas pedal half-way down while cranking?

I really doubt that the fuel pressure sensor would cause a no start, then work later. However, this is a common symptom for a failing idle air bypass valve (aka IAC).
 
Iac

+1 IAC valve get flaky then finally fail, leaving you stuck somewhere. Just replace it, 10 minutes job. You will eventually need it.
 
You're right about the quickness of replacement. It probably only took 10 minutes to remove, clean, and reinstall.

When it won't start, it doesn't make a difference whether or not I hold the accelerator partway down (between 25-50%). Won't start either way. That's why I thought it may not be the IAC.
 
Ohh.. Ok. I would take a look at the EGR and possibly clean it..

Did you hook a fuel pressure gauge when cranking to see what kind of pressure you were making? That seems to be the only test for the regulator that I can find..
 
You know, I didn't take a look while it was cranking. I should've though. Looks like I'll have to borrow that guage again.
