Frustrated and Discouraged...engine problems, again!

Tore my car apart today.. Turns out the exhaust cam was off a tooth on timing.. Problem is now.. my noise is back from being gone for 4 days.. :/ we will see if noise goes away!

I ordered a Jaguar 4th-gen secondary tensioner and it is due to be delivered today (on ebay for $74!), so as soon as I get out of work, I am going to replace that tensioner, realign the cam flats and tighten everything back up.

Hopefully this will clear up the noise.

If there were bent valves or anything like that, the car wouldn't run as good as it does when I drive it. The only issue I had was a rough idle and noisy "lifter" sounds at idle. It seems to dissipate when I drive it and the car runs smooth with plenty of power when driven. So hopefully I caught it early enough and was smart enough to park my car and not drive it.

I will post an update this evening, after I get nitty gritty....

So this was done a year ago do you have any documentation like a receipt I will go back there and give them a piece if my mind or boot that's alot for a issue that didn't go away.

Yes, I DID have a receipt somewhere, just gotta find it.

I am curious as to what exactly is on that receipt as to what was done. Probably not enough detail in the receipt to do anything legal, but I will most certainly complain and ask them what exactly was done (before I tell them about the issue of course).

My plan of attack is asking them what exactly was done, and THEN tell them about the new issue and see what they say...

If the idle is rough.. the Exhaust cam timing is probably off a tooth like mine was... Its so disappointing.. Fixed the idle issue on my car by lining up the flats of the cams.. fixed the running rich on bank 1 and lean on bank 2, misfire, idle, and check engine light.. BUT THe noise.. WONT GO AWAY!

Ok, here's the scoop....

I bought the timing chain tensioner from here: http://stores.homestead.com/hstrial-CRoberts452/-strse-140/Lincoln-LS-timing-chain/Detail.bok

I installed the tensioner but noticed that the timing chain still has some slack in it so it has stretched. I am assuming that is your problem as well.

When you installed the tensioner, the timing chain probably felt snug, but after you get it all together and run the engine, it probably slacked out a little since it tends to do that after several revolutions.

I am going to order a new secondary timing chain and try that before I even put mine back together.

This source has an upper timing chain with a master link so that you don't have to pull the front cover of the engine off! Simply cut your old chain (protect engine from metal shrapnel) and install the new chain with the master link! http://stores.homestead.com/hstrial...n-LS-timing-chain/Detail.bok?category=LINCOLN

I am ordering one now. That is the only obvious issue I can see that may be causing the continuing noise issue.

The LS V8 is a zero tolerance motor so seeing your exhaust cam was a tooth off, you prolly bent a valve. I broke a secondary chain upon start up and bent 3 valves so you driving might have damaged one or two.

well my noise went away today.. been running fine.. trying to sell it for all i got in it.. switching to a mazda miata..

She's all better now! (Knocking on wood)

The new secondary timing chain with the master link worked like a charm!

I replaced the secondary tensioner and timing chain on that side and it now idles and runs beautifully, and that rattling "lifter noise" is completely gone. No more engine shake either. Totally cleared it up.

So if you are still getting a noise even after changing the tensioner, I suggest getting a new master link chain like I did because your old chain is probably stretched and once you run the engine it becomes too slack again.

Are you serious? I would rather buy a bus pass

I agree!

My friends are always telling me that I should trade her in and get something else, but I just have this unexplainable love for my LS. LOL

I don't know what it is, but even though I have put about $2k into mine since I bought her used in 2007, I still love my LS and plan on keeping her.

Now I have 160k miles on her so obviously there are going to be some parts that are going to start failing due to the fact that they are only designed to last only so long, and after reading a lot of the horror stories by many, I feel lucky that mine has only had the problems it's had. (Knocking on wood, again)

So hopefully they are only minor issues and that I've gotten the major ones behind me now.

Well I still have to buy a new chain for mine. But now my Beloved LS has decided to Overheat now :/

Due to the Fan not kicking into high and low speeds during Running temps..
Works fine for about 10 minutes when you first start it up. But after that the fan just stays on a low setting.. Yay..

Going to buy a new Actuator for it today for 150$.:/
Then buy a new Chain

But what about the MIATA????? LOL

Lmfao, I fell in love with the LS.. But its pissing me off everything breaking on it! and im just HOPING that its the actuator.. if I pay 150$ for something that it doesnt even need im going to be F&^ked royally because Im on a VERY tight budget atm..

I know the feeling trust me it sucks! But hey when its running good its a great car thats why i never wait to fix anything on my car if something breaks i get it fixed right away, I personally would have taken my car to a lincoln dealership myself to have them diagnose the problem because it sounds like your not really sure whats wrong with your car overheating and replacing parts because you "think" there bad can get very costly and aggravating.

Ive said before im having an issue with Ls overheating as well replaced the thermostat cant find no leaks my fan is still working it sounds like a jet if the temp gets anywhere above half, so i went to the degas bottle and noticed when i removed it the hose on the top of the bottle that would go the thermostat housing, inside the bottle theres a long metal rod that would go down to coolant was snapped off and just laying in there so i hope its that(still waiting for my bottle to arrive) if not off to the dealer i go :D

Let us know if your repair fixes your issue good luck!

Well I think personally when my car starts making temp my Actuator is getting stuck closed.

Because last week i did a complete flush on my Fan system due to previous owner had old fluid with water in it.. I think froze up the Fan actuator.. Well i ran some seafoam Trans Tune stuff in it and it freed it up enough where when it is cold it would actuate.. but when the heat gets to it.. it just stays shut or on the low setting...
It saddening but ive heard of some stuff like this happening to the actuator.. If this part does fix it tomorrow ill deff be posting a Thread on the Symptoms that mine had and how to fix it.

The fan should stay on the low setting for most of the time your car is on. There is a sensor, right on the front of the motor, by the coolant fill spot and if you disconnect it, while the car is running, it should trigger your high speed fan setting to come on. If it doesn't switch into high speed, then you most likely have a problem with the fan/pump itself. Good luck!!!

To Hawk:
I know you replaced that one tensioner and that chain and that temporarily fixed your problem, but I suggest that you change out all the rest of the chains, tensioners, and guides very soon as they will be going out soon as well. Several people of this site have done the temporary fix and it break 3 months down the road and then they have the bigger problem of taking a or both heads off the car to get them repaired. Just my 2 cents worth of knowledge.
