Nope. It seems durable. I got the black carbon wrap. So far I can't say it needs to be coated. If you are concerned about that, consider 3M. You'll pay a bit more but quality should match the price.

How did you manage to get the gear selector painted? I tried to take it out but it seemed to be stuck in there.

At least on the first gens, there are 4 plastic clips you squeeze together with a needle nose pliers, then it pulls right up. I pulled my shifter plate out a couple weeks ago, but had to drive the car, so put it back together.
