First review of the Eco-Boosted 2010 MKT and MKS

Ford/Lincoln/Mecury is coming out with some exciting products finally... Although I gotta say in the MKS Ecoboost video when he went WOT it looked about the same speed as my Mark VIII on motor...

My LS will probably be the last Lincoln I will ever buy. I bought it for the V8, rear wheel drive, coil over suspension (no stupid struts), aluminum front end and conservative styling. It was a real sports sedan.

Amen brother!!!

I'm waiting for the Flex EcoBoost to come out.

As to the aftermarket comment, expect to see it come on slowly but definately. Ford is expecting to sell something like 1/3+ of its total vehicles with either the V6 or I4 turbo SIDI engines under the EcoBoost name. What is going to be interesting is how the aftermarket deals with upgrades on an SIDI engine, its not just the up the octane and the timing simple. That's Spark Ignition Direct Injection by the way.

Ford disclosed today that they're working on a "Coyote" 5.0L V-8 for use in the new Mustang and F-150, to replace the old 4.6L.

Expected to deliver 400+ hp and 400+ torque; who knows, if Lincoln ever gets a RWD MKR, maybe they'll slap it in there.

The official stats say MKS ecoboosted does 0-60 in 7s. That's pretty disappointing. Taurus SHO will probably be the way to go with the ecoboost, sadly.

Agreed. I can't knock these new Lincolns because they are really nice and I love Ford so it's good to see these cars that are just blowing everyone away, but none of them are designed to do what they do like the LS was designed to do what it does (reliability notwithstanding :p).

That and every car that is coming out the past couple years is HUGE.

Dude you just blew my mind. I read that today about the 'Stang and I didn't even think about what Lincoln could get that. Nice! Something long and with 2 doors, please.

P.S. sorry for all the posts in a row.

I should also add that the new Coyote 5.0L (replaces old 4.6L and 5.4L V-8s) is going to be available as an option this fall for 2010 Ford Mustangs. :)

I think you're thinking of the base 3.7L engine; the EcoBoost should easily be able to do the 6.X range.

MotorTrend got the base MKS with 3.7L engine from 0-60 in 7 seconds flat.

according to car and driver
PERFORMANCE (C/D EST):
Zero to 60 mph: 6.5 sec
Standing ¼-mile: 14.6 sec
Top speed (governor limited): 120 mph

not faster than our LS's but we still dont have the official numbers.

True, but those numbers are for the 5200lb MKT crossover. The MKS is about 1000 lbs lighter, so I'd expect much improved times.

I hate to say it, but the 3.5L ecoboost cars will be waxing v8's, even the new 5.0 DOHC in the mustang.

Any forced induction car is real easy to modify/make more power, a simple tune with more boost and 91 octane will be making big numbers.

Or add some ethanol as well :)

I beg to differ, conventional forced induction with indirect injection are easy to crank up the power but the science of SIDI is so new I doubt we'll see large scale power increase opportunities outside of the OEMs for several years at least. It certainly has the potential to make more power but I don't think that'll be realized for a while.

I believe the current 3.5L EcoBoost is capable of outputting up to 450 hp and 450 ft-lbs torque.

The crazy thing isn't that the engine makes crazy hp and torque (I believe its 350-360hp btw) but that the torque is really high across the band. I saw a graph that showed at 1500rpm the torque was sky high thanks to twin turbos.

anything with a turbo or a super can outdo a large V6 or V8. THough it really doesn't make it much more fuel economic :p

What I meant is that the 3.5L EcoBoost has the potential to output up to 450 hp (with only minor adjustments). Although in its current application, it "only" gives 355hp for the MKS and 365 hp for the Taurus SHO. I don't know whether the current transmission and AWD setup would be able to handle a 450 hp engine however.

Yes, the torque is crazy good on the EB. 350 lb-ft at 1500 RPM. The torque response is not quite the same between the SHO and MKS.

# 365 hp (272 kW) @5500 rpm, 350 lb·ft (475 N·m) @3500rpm

* 2010- Ford Taurus SHO

# 355 hp (265 kW) @5700 rpm, 350 lb·ft (475 N·m) @1500-5250rpm

* 2010- Ford Flex
* 2010- Lincoln MKS
* 2010- Lincoln MKT

See graph here:

Slight revision: the original TwinForce that debuted with the MKR RWD coupe concept could produce 415 hp, not 450 hp, pardon me.

From Ford's website: "Combining the high octane found in E-85 or premium gasoline with TwinForce technology allows the Lincoln MKR’s V-6 to deliver 415 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque".

+1 Ringmaster
V8 RWD = must.
Everytime I see the MKS it looks so bulgy and round... no edge to it at all... and then I get closer and I start to think, well, but it works nice in real life, then I get next to it and its a FARKING BARGE!! WAAYYYYYYYYY too big in my opinion. It sits almost another LS higher at belt and roofline.
