So i've been reading through these threads almost everyday and i'm buying a 2000 lincoln ls with the v8, all power options. Don't have any idea on what performance part to spend the money on first though. any pointers?

How many miles on this car?
I'd save your money to do the head gaskets when they go, cuz that's expensive. But, if you've got money to burn, I'd get a K&N intake, Magnaflow exhaust, and an SCT flasher.

You're only options are:
- KKM True-Rev Sport Induction Kit (intake tube optional)
- Magnaflow Exhaust System
- SCT Flasher Unit
- Nitrous
Those are quick bolt on items that can increase HP quite a bit. Your next options are more costly and require a great amount of mechanical knowledge:
- Supercharger (search the threads, QuikLS has it on his LS but took nearly two years to complete.)
- Turbo (search the threads, ILLS is starting a project by adding it to his LS.)
Other than that you don't have any other options for increase in power.

Depending on your build date your gears could be 3.31 or 3.58. If 3.31 then swapping in 3.58's will give you reasonable gains down low. Cheap as well if you can find it in a junkyard. You can get this from the T-bird or any 2003/newer LS. I think all of the V6 LS's had 3.58's as well..

how would you know which gears you have? i have a pretty early model 00' v8 and would like to know which gears i have...
what is the advantage of installing the 3.58's?

00-02 and 03-06 DON'T SWAP.
You have to stay with your generation. You can get 3.58s from real early 00 models and T-Birds 02 only. This is what I've learned so far. If you have a Gen2 you should already have 358s.
To find out what you have is easy. Just look under the rear of the car and the diff has a tag. It is pretty easy to spot the 3 31 or the 3 58 on the tag.

FYI the gears increase torque multiplication which will make you car faster from 0 to say 100 but will hurt fuel economy and top speed.
Lincoln went from 3.58 to 3.31 for CAFE fuel ecnonmy reasons. Later the 03 engine was more efficient so they could go back to 3.58's and increase performance/responsiveness.
This is a relatively cheap mod (the direct swap). There are others here who are spending more $$ to put in a 3.73 gear and limited slip diff which is a lot more work.
I put 4.54's in my Wrangler to compensate for 33inch tires. 4.10's would have brought it to stock gearing specs but I could not resist a little more "gear"
The jeep is a banshee (from a wrangler perspective) from 0 to 60 but dies at about 85 MPH LOL. Gets about 11 miles per gallon!!

^yessir. jeeps are no slouch when it comes to get up and go. dropping the 4.54s im assuming you have a v8. i had a straight 6 in my cherokee before my ls and it was pretty peppy for a bulky/boxy suv.

Actually I just picked up my built diff. Ford Racing 4:10s with Traction Lock.

Personally, I would upgrade the brakes first--going faster is good, but stopping faster is even better. Going to the Porterfield R4S pads or either of the EBCs will get you a significant brake upgrade for short money.
BTW, I put my money where my mouth is--the upgraded pads were the first real mods I did to both of my LSes (unless you count buying GWL's '04 LSE Chrome wheels for my '06
).
