I did some initial searching on this, but will readily admit that I didn't search every single result that came back. So big apologies on my part if I should have searched a bit more before asking this.

I'll be installing the K&N FIPK sometime this week, and I thought I saw a post where it was recommended to disconnect the battery cable overnight so the LS would "learn" the characteristics of the new intake's air flow. Is that what I need to do, or do I just put the thing in and drive it (assuming that everything is done properly in the install, of course)?

TRU - ready for some fresh air

I just installed and drove it and felt the results instantly. I didnt disconnect the battery. Maybe its just so its learns the amount of air flow faster instead of gradualy realizing something has changed

The only time I disconnected my battery in the 3 years I owned my LS was when I did stereo work. That was it. You'll be fine without doing it.

i put the same on my 03 and i also didn't unconnect the battery. and everything is still going good. also theirs some black stripping that you can put around the metal bracket but i personally thought it was way to hard to get on, maybe i was just doing something wrong. but i just made sure my bolts and brackets were really tight and it doesn't hit on anything so i didn't even put the black stripping on. so i was just throwing that out there, also does anyone know a good place i can get the kit to reoil and clean mine. ive had mine in for acouple months and its going to need a cleaning soon.

Only disconnect if after installation you through a code because of higher air flow; should not be a problem.

I too did not disconnect the battery... That is nonsense.

It started right up and i took off making it growl!

Also while you have the intake stuff apart, blast the butterfly valve with some carb cleaner. Mine had a light coating of black gunk. However I am OCD and things like that bother me, I am sure it is unnecessary.

I went ahead and installed it tonight. Everything seemed to go fine. The filter itself was split at the lip (it's used) but when I tightened the clamp it brought it completely together.

I took her for a ride, and while I did notice a difference in throttle response, there still seemed to be the slight hesitation from when I pushed the pedal down to when she decided to really want to go. I do realize that a flash tuner or comparable may be the only way to get rid of that. However, what I am questioning is whether or not everything is on tight or correctly. I drove a bit with the window down to listen, and while most of the time I could hear a decent growl with accelerating, there were also times that the growl wasn't as prominent and I could hear a slight whistle or whoosh. I thought it did that a little bit with the stock air intake on the car, but when you change something it makes you second-guess everything.

So, is that somewhat normal or should I take a look at things?

TRU - whistle while you work..... or your LS works

the woosh is normal and awesome... everything you described sounds normal

Yea the whistle/swoosh is just part of the new intake. I think it sounds sweet with it lol. You will learn to get your foot in those sweet spots on the pedal to accelerate without shifting up in gear. It is alot of fun! :D Prepare to see your MPGs drop off too lol

Yeah I felt a little weird with that woosh toom but its just the cone filter is a lot less rstricted and doesn't have that silencer stuff the strock air box had so you hear it sucking up air. Its sweet!!! I love making it growl without it down shifting like Andrizzle said. Makes it sound beasty!! enjoy
