My coil misfire's have been really bad lately. I visited the dealer today and played some hard ball with the service advisor and the manager. I brought with me my stack of previous service slips showing all the coils thats have been replaced once and sometimes twice. I also brought the extended program letter regarding the coils which cover them until 100k, parts and labor. I am currently at 111k miles. I told him it was basically unacceptable to have so many coils fail in such a short amount of time, as it boils down i am supplying the parts, 8 new coils and 8 new plugs out of my own pocket and they are going to comp the labor to install them. I already had the parts on order to do the job myself but atleast i am getting it done at the dealer for free. So as of saturday i will have all new oem plugs and coils replaced. Lets see how long these new parts hold up before the next issue. My dealer has always been good to me and TeamFord.com has been great supplying me with the new parts (dccv, degas bottle, coils, plugs, fuel filter) at a good price. I think the deal breaker was that i was also spending the $$$ for new rear brakes as well. Anyway, after this weekend i will have a great running LS again. So hopefully you wont hear any crying from me about misfire's for some time.

Mine magically stopped missing within the last week, its totally just gone unless I start in third and floor it... or it shifts weird on the highway doing about 55 - 60, other than that its runs fine. Debating on if I should wait until it starts to mis a LOT and or all the time, or replace my drivers side bank now...

did they ever check if oil was getting in the plugs courtesy of the vcg's?

With all the trips regarding the coils they never found oil and my last warranty visit was last november. So unless it developed a leak recently i would think its just sh!tty coils, but if i'm not mistaken the later model LS's had the vcg leak fixed. The service guy admitted that just some cars go forever without coil problems and some have repeated problems. Just luck of the draw i guess.

Not sure if you have a heated garage but if it was me, I'd replace them now. Next thing you know it's 10 degrees out and then they really start missing.

I thought the only issue with the coils were do to bad VCG's leaking?

Not at all, from Ford's letter on the subject...

"Some of the vehicles may experience an engine misfire condition predominantly due to internal
breakdown in the coil and lack of adhesion between the epoxy and the coil housing material."

This is why they do free replacement of failing coils on 2003 to 2005 cars. The 2004 and up ones very rarely have any oil leak issues, but very often have coil failures.

Hmmm, well is it the same issue for the 1st gens?

Hi Joe Hate to disagree with you but I have an 04 that I bought back to the dealer from 35k to 50k (V6) for coils every 4_6 months. I think Ford got stuck with a bad bunch from the vendor and was running out the string. I had all the OEM coils changed out and no problems. I get a kick out of everybody who pushes OEM parts. I woudnt want to pay money for FOMOCO defective parts. Good Luck To All

hell no!

I dont know why it isnt. The Gen1's have it worse!

I dont have a heated garage, but my mechanic does :D As long as he gets a case of Miller Im set for a weekend of work :D And he gets my parts 30% off :D

What are you disagreeing with? I should have pointed out that the free coverage is only for V8's, and only for 10 years / 100K miles.

Edit : Never mind then...

Hasnt this been discussed that all "other" coils for the LS are just re-branded motorcraft? There is no aftermarket there for all coils are technically "OEM".

Yes, that seems to be the case. I think you might be better off to buy from Ford. Then there is a better chance of getting newer ones that might have design or manufacturing improvements.

I have an 02 V8 which I bought last November. The previous owner took amazing care of it, and it still drives like new.

I had the dealer (where all its service has been done) print out the service history of the car, and there was no sign of any coils ever being replaced. In fact, other than a mudflap replacement and command start being installed, nothing other than maintenance has been done to this car at all.

Are coil problems something that can happen late in life (there's over 60k miles/100,000km on the car now), or did I luck out?

My 04 didn't have it's first coil problem till somewhere around 66K miles. It's had four replaced so far (now a little over 100K miles). My 06 hasn't had any coil problems yet, but it's only a little over 50K miles.

I have an 01 I bought with 75k miles, made the dealer replace 2 coils (free of charge) being they failed the day I drove it off the lot. In the 2+ years I've owned it I replaced a couple more coils, then decided to do all 8 with ebay coils. Bad idea. The ebay coils are S*! Failed in three months. Now I'm going to replace with Accel 4.6 97-07 mustang coils.
