I have a 2004 LS 3.9 . Is there a way for someone to read codes from E.C.M without a hand held device ?

I'm nearly certain you'll have to have a device of some kind to pull your codes. Some systems would flash the engine light on earlier models letting you know what the code was, but those days are almost completely gone. You can swing by autozone for a generic read out, but if your ecm has a dealership specific, airbag, body module, etc. code, you'll have to have a more sophisticated device to steer you in the right direction. Independent auto shops can usually do this, but they're probably going to want some compensation.
