Hi new here wife's 2000 ls 3.9 starts fine but will race for 2 to 3 minutes at 2000 RPM And she will not wait for it to come back to idle it idles at 850 after time Thanks Carl

Help guys I can not find the right anwser The car will idle for 2 to 3 minutes at fast idle 2000 rpm before coming down to 850

Unplug the battery for 30 mins to reset the PCM, that might help. When the battery is unplugged check for any obvious signs of damage on any hoses. How many miles? when was it last inspected? how long have these symptoms been going on?

About 30 seconds after start up, lightly tap on the IAC with a hammer. If that alters the idle speed, then your IAC is starting to stick and should be replaced.

The car has 175k I sprayed the engine down with some starter fluid to check for intake or hoses leaking I tried the battery no change no codes are pressent It been 4 to 5 months I scared the wife has little passences the tranny shifts hard at first the car will idle down after 2 to 3 minutes if she could just wait is there any sensors that could be bad that controls the idle?

I have tried to clean this in the past should I just buy a new one?
I'd want to be sure it is the problem first.
Here's another way to test. When it is at high idle, unplug the electrical connector to the IAC. The engine should stall or go down to a really low idle. If it does, then the IAC is very probably not your problem.

Ok correct me if I'm wrong. But I thought the ls does this at start up cause my 02 3.9 Rpm goes up to about 2000 then comes back down.

Also check and make sure the throttle position sensor that sits behind the IAC is not loose,
I had problem with the idle dipping low from time to time when come to a stop, or stopping and going into reverse, I checked that sensor and it was sort of loose. Tighten it up no more problems.

For 2-3 minutes? I'm no expert but I can say for a fact mine hits 2000'ish for a second, maybe two, then drops down fast.

Longer than a second or two (when it's cold), but way less than two or three minutes.

Thanks everyone for responding Yes the car will run up to 90 seconds before idleing down I will check things out tonight even when its warm it still runs for 20 seconds

Normal behavior.... It's for emissions.
