Fan Issues?

Figured I would throw this one to the brain trust to see what's up.

I have a 2001 LS V8. When the car heats up to normal according to the gauge on the dash, the engine bay is actually really hot. way too hot. It dosen't seem like the fan is running. But the guage still reads normal. Right in the center. Also, wierd clear leek of clear slightly greasy oderless liquid from right behind the front right wheel well, only when warmed up. It seems to leak alot all at once and then stop. And only when hot. Its not coolant from what I can tell due to the color, or brake fluid, or PS fluid, or oil. Drives good, but I am afraid to drive it for long periods of time and want to trouble shoot brfore I go near a dealer.

Any thoughts?
 
The drip line for the a/c is about where you describe. The condensation isn't greasy; maybe the ground is but you haven't had the a/c on? The engine bay is normally incredibly hot. Engines run hot these days for emissions. Mine takes hours to cool down. As long as the gauge stays centered I wouldn't worry. As the fan is hydraulic you won't ever see it run fast. You would need to have the dealer run a diagnostic on the fan. They can see if it runs through all speeds (the fan is variable speed).

I only drive in the car for 2-3 minutes to get to work. AC in the garage so the need for A/C in the car hasn't happened yet. I don't drive the car enough. It actually only gets warm like twice a week. I know the engine bay gets hot but this was really really hot, especially for a day in the mid seventies and I only drove a couple miles. Fan was running so I know it wasn't not working, but maybe it wasn't running fast enough at higher temps?? Could this be a thermostat issue? Kinda don't want to be the guy who discovers the problem after a long road trip!:D ..

Gonna run dio and see what comes up.

Clear fluid under the D/S wheel well only when it's hot...
Hate to disagree with you but the only hydrolic system that interacts directly with the engine temperature is the Cooling system. In small ammounts, coolant does look clear and it has a oil like texture.
Try this. Pop your hood( while the engine's cold). squeeze the rubber coolant hose on the Passanger side (P/S) of the car closest to the radiator. Pay close attention to the consistancy of the hose ( hard, soft). Let the car run until the fan comes on. Squeeze that same hose again. If it's hard and cold, the problem is the thermostate. When the thermostate dosen't open at high temps, presure builds in the coolant system. The leak you noticed could be from the weakest point in the coolant system ( loose hose clamp, small hole). It's something that probrobly wouldn't leak under normal operating conditions. When you change the thermostate, you should flush the coolant

Maybe it is car urine. It pissed itself from running so hot. Thermostat prob bad. Dio tool said engine temp was 213 and climbing. I only drove for 15-20 minutes. So, Rockauto has two different thermostats. One says 183 degrees and one is a hi temp (motorcraft) 190. Does it matter which one I Get or is it really a horse a piece?

Nuts.. The hose was hot and soft at the hottest point. haven't checked cold yet. will tonight. My heat also seems to be not hot. A trick a guy from work told me would help narrow down the problem. Turned the heat to 77 and it was not real warm. I will definetly check the the coolant system. I should be able to get a pressure test down on Monday. Altough....no leak today. It seems to happen on and off. Wierd S#@t if you ask me.

Was the fan on when you checked it? The fan will not engauge until the engine temp goes above normal operating temp. You can't always trust the gauges and judging by your earlier post, you shouldn't.

Yeah...the fan was rolling. Seemed fine too. I checked that as soon as I got to work. That's why i was wierded out that the guages said normal but the computer dio said 215 degrees.

Hey did you see the post about bleeding the cooling system? I was worng. There is a way to bleed the cooling system. Check out the link.

You should try this first. If it dosen't work then go back to the thermostate.
 
My car was doing the same thing. The coolant is most likley coming frm a crack in tghe degas bottle. It starts small and only when the pressure has been very severe. Than over time (2 months in my case) it gets bad. CHeck your degas bottle. Its a 15 minute job and can narrow down your leak problem.
