failsafe mode!

Mine does that, too sometimes. Even after replacing all 8 coils and plugs at once with two newer VCG done by the dealer. I just deal with it, because I'm tired of getting pissed about it. lol

... There's just a little shake every once in a while when idling.

My 04 does this two. My 06 doesn't (always smooth at idle). If anyone finds a solution, I'd like to know.
[Four coils have been replaced on the 04. The misfire counts are all zero.]

Update

Bringing back an old thread I started. The coil(s) finally took a crap on me. I got a blinking check engine light on acceleration. It only seemed to happen after the car was warm and was very obvious when accelerating at higher speeds (going from 60-70 or so). I took it to a pretty reputable (or so I thought) dealer here in PA and they tried to give me crap about the extended warranty but eventually admitted that they were going to have to pay for it and also replace/fix my valve cover gaskets. However, they also tried to get me to spend $600+ on other (tune-up/maintenance) items - coolant flush, fuel system flush and clean, trans flush, new air filter, new fuel filter, new wipers, new cabin filter etc. etc.

Quick question. I have a drop in K&N filter and the guy at the dealership told me it wasn't installed correctly. Obviously it just sits in there, but I remember my dad's K&N coming with a sticky surround. I don't know if mine came with the same thing? Is it vital that this be in there or can the filter just sit in there like any regular paper filter? The guy at the dealer seemed like he was just trying to get as much money out of me as possible (and I've used K&N's before with no problems) but am I missing something?

I have an 04 LS, and I had the same problem except it wasnt the coils, it was a bad right rear wheel sensor, so when I would take off fast or the tires would spin in the rain it would go into fail safe mode.

Just doing a search had etc engine failsafe mode come up this morning when I was trying to pass some cars, does a check engine light come on when it is the coils?

hey -

My 2003 Lincoln LS Sport V8 has been having the same problems. If the tranny is in 3rd, 4th gear or so, and I accelerate heavily, the car throws the error "ETC FAILSAFE MODE", and the 'limp home' mode comes on. This has been going on for at least a year, maybe two.

According to the dealer, who is working on it right now, it is the electronic throttle body, and it will be $600 to fix.

I asked for more detail - he said that they were able to re-create the problem 3 different times on the highway, with a diagnostic tool hooked up. He says it is not the coils, and no error messages have been recorded. (I find this hard to believe)

If anyone has any suspicions or opinions, I'd love to hear them. Otherwise, take this as my minor contribution of anecdotal information to the board.

Also - he recommends that I clean the fuel injection for about $150 or so. Says its needed every 30k miles, and I'm at 56k. I'm going to search the forum to determine whether this is a valid expense, but if anyone knows offhand, I'm curious.

Yeah. I should also mention what prompted me to get it fixed.

I cranked the car up on Sunday, after I hadn't driven it all day Saturday.

The RPM's immediately spiked to 3,500 or so. Then they fell down around 0. After that, the engine began to vibrate and jerk erratically, like it does when failsafe mode comes on. I shut the car down without even putting it in gear. After that I smelled gasoline, and didn't drive it. Today it drove fine, up to the dealer.

Anyway, I can't find any info that tells me whether or not I'm getting ripped off with the $160 fuel injection cleaning. They already cleaned out my tranny fluid a few months ago, from what I understand, that was definitely necessary.

Yes, fuel injection cleaning is a rip-off. Not only that, it can do some harm and reduce the life of the injectors slightly. Open your service schedule booklet. You will notice that one of the things never mentioned in all of the 150K miles that it covers is fuel injection cleaning.

yeah man, I just read "Extreme Fuel System Service" on the ticket, and I felt it sink in that I'd been ripped off. Nobody calls it something that stupid, unless it is useless and needs to be sold. Electronic throttle bodies don't really need to be sold.

I asked him a few times for the error report. He tells me that no codes were on the system, called it "Weird."

any bets on whether this is the last of the problem? I put my car on craigslist today for $12k to see if I get any bites.

yes, it will either flash to tell you to slow down, because the engine cant handle and the coils goes bad, or it goes solid if a coil is completly bad

No, that's not how it works. The meaning of the check engine light is federal law.

On solid: There is a problem and you should have it checked/fixed as soon as is convenient.

Flashing: Damage is occurring and you should go directly to get it fixed. (In the case of the LS this means that heavy misfire is detected and the cats are being damaged.)

I have an 03 with 39k miles that starting giving me coil error codes in September. I replaced number 2 and 8. One was soaked in oil. The other didn't have oil, but had arc'ed from water.
Three weeks ago, the got the failsafe message on cold start up. The code tells me the throttle body. I took it to the dealer, and they ran the coils through a "stress test" and replaced all 8 (including the two week old replacemenets) under the extended warranty. I had to pay for 2 (the ones I had just replaced) which burns me, but they say all needed to be replaced and they couldn't warranty the aftermarket ones.
Drove it home and it sat for a few days. Went to start it, and went into failsafe mode for the throtttle body.
Took it back, and they said the throttle body would need to be replaced $550-600, but the part was backed ordered. The car sat at the dealership for two weeks, "waiting for parts". I have another car to drive. I talked to the parts and they are telling me it will be after Dec 15, as the notes say Lincoln has selected a new parts vendor and the parts are still being performance tested. I brought the car home to sit in the garage rather than the back lot at the dealer. Interestingly, it started right up with no problems. Drive it home with no problems. I cleared all the codes. Went out the next morning to start it, and failsafe mode again.
Not much I can do. I can pull one from wrecking yard, but it will be the same bad design.
So if I didn't have a back up car, it would sit at the dealership for 7 weeks waiting for parts. How much does that suck.

Not to bump an old thread or anything, but I was getting ETC Engine Failsafe rather repeatedly for a long time. It started out getting them once every few weeks while cruising. Then it started getting them while driving slow.

It got really bad for a while, and then I noticed that when I would turn sharp I would then get a traction control error followed by the failsafe error.

For me, it ended up being the battery.

It still started the car great, and had good voltage... but it was the original battery with 70k on it.

Replaced it with a red top, and I havent had so much as a hiccup.
