explorer gears

i was talking to the guy at the lincoln dealership today about the $15 gears that i bought. he said they might have come from an explorer which have been removed because of noise, any way to tell if there from an explorer. and how did they fix this problem
 
Gears are gears, reguardless of what vehicle they came from. If they removed them due to noise, they will most likely make a whining noise when installed in yours. They could have a bad set of gears. I've seen it before, while installing a brand new set of ford gears in a v6 mustang. 7.5 axle. I installed a set, and another tech installed a set. They still made a little hum.
 
I have used 4.10s before in my 89 mustang GT from a explorer, never had a issue. The gear set is something that does not get bad from age. Unless the tech installs it and hears a whine noise I think he is full of :q:q:q:q, how can you look at a gear set and say they removed it due to noise? maybe he went to 3.27 gears for better mileage.

I have installed 4 sets of used gears in all my previous cars and one of them even had a chipped tooth, still had no noise or issues EVER!

easy from a mismatched or improper wear pattern on the gears.

a qualified tech could look at a set of used gears and instantly tell if they were set up properly.

AND..a properly qualilfied tech wouldn't waste his time or your money installing used gears.

even if you saved 50% over the cost of new gears, it's still NOT a deal IMHO.
 
Yea I would never get used gears... gears aren't that expensive but the labor is very expensive... don't waste your time with used gears.
 
I got a bad set of gears brand new from Ford. Never heard of this happening to another before but after verifying with a second shop Max took care of me.

I wouldn't pass up 3.73s for $15, if the wear pattern looks good, I say install em. They're just big chunks of metal, they're either bad or they're not, and you or your installer should be able to tell easily enough by looking at them.

Exactly.

You could buy a new set of gears, have them improperly installed - and they'll whine.

Have helped a tech install a few sets of gears, it's ALL in having the right shims, tollerences, etc.
