on the cars with etc if maf fails or is disconnected they do go into failsafe mode. I know this from experience
now if air is sneaking in around the maf I do not "believe" the system goes into failsafe mode (although that will cause other issues) as I forgot to plug a breather hose back in once and just got a lean code (no failsafe mode).
so your maf could be bad or (my guess) #3 or 4 coil going bad and the rf is whacking out the whole system.
