I have a couple questions about the 3.9 v8 in my 2000 ls. The engine is in good condition as far as I know so this is more of a preparation for the future than a necessity. Since this is a "de-bored" jaguar 4.0, will a jag engine go in with minimal changes? Can a later model ls engine, with more hp, be swapped into my ls? I realize that some of the electronics may be different, my main question is are the differences between the early ls and late ls and jag 4.0 an internal difference or external difference? If its a difference in the internals that make more power than I should be able to change the longblock and keep my accessories and get a good power increase while keeping the car as a daily driver. Any advice is appreciated.
 
The 3.9 is not 'de-bored', it's 'de-stroked'. The 4.0 is 86 MM X 86 MM. The 3.9 is 86 X 85. There are only detail differences between the two engines and it IS possible to do some mix 'n' match. See the thread below 'Land Speed LS' for an examination of this combo as it applies to my ownership of E/F CC at Maxton, the home of the ECTA.

From my research Ive actually found the Jag 4.0 and the LS 3.9 to be the same size and both come in at 86x86, Jag rounded up and for the LS it was rounded down, 3995cc's IIRC Ill try and find the article explaining it.
 
Calculate the displacement using 'all 86' and '86&85' and you'll see that there's 2.82 cid difference. Not much, but a difference after all. These measurements are readily available on line. Wiki it!

There are other differences, such as oil filter placement.

I dont really trust Wiki, I think I pulled the info from a Jag performance site..? Maybe.
 
Anyone ever thought of putting in 4.2 internals out of a later S-type? You could turn it into a 4.4 if it would take the additional 2mm of bore (I have no idea of you'd have to resleeve or what to get that much additional bore, it is almost .080 over after all) or maybe just use a 4.4 Rover shortblock with our heads on it.

Who knows, food for thought anyway.
 
The latest version of the AJ engine series is actually five litres. I don't think they import them.

I was thinking a 4.4 from an '05 on LR3 or RR (I think that's when they stopped using the BMW 4.4 anyway) if the bolt, coolant and oil holes line up we could just slap our top end on. Once in a while you can find a 4.4 shortblock for a grand or so. I wish I had the resources to try it out. I nominate cammer or Quick to look into this. :D

The new 5.0 JLR is for all intents and purposes a different engine family except in name.
 
for the sake of arguement lets say that this is possible, if I put a 5.0 ford motor (stroked to 347ci of course) in the ls with a mustang aod, 5spd or 6spd trans will the rear end handle 375-475hp? I can fit the 5.0 in without a problem and run a standalone computer and aftermarket gauges to go around the factory wiring and computer.
 
The rear will hold under the circumstances of you running street tires and not upgrading to a LSD rear by the way of a 8.8 LSD carrier.. Not sure after that.
