Hello all,

Been snooping around on this matter with the loud JET ENGINE noise that some have spoken about in the search forum and have not found a distinct answer. I have a 02 lsv8 with 114,000 miles and started to notice, a semi loud engine noise. Sounds like a jet engine roar upon accelleration. Some search links on this matter suggested a bad vacuum?? Some said the tensioners?? And some that i have read referenced the timing chain issue. Are these linked to the loud noise I am hearing?

Not a fan issue, I converted to electrical and fan is new. Just wondering what it could be.

How long after installing the fan did the noise start? Aftermarket intake? A vacuum leak would present drivability issues.
 
about a year i would say it started making noise. Yes i have a aftermarket intake, should i check there? What should I look for?
 
you may need to record and upload here to get a real answer... Just way too many possibilities with this little of info
 
Ok i will try and do that tonight, what could some possibilities be do you think? Most common maybe?
maybe a list of things you think and I could check into all of them.
 
No oil
Timing Chains
Water pump
vaccum / air leak
tensioner pulley
failing turbo / supercharger...
Cop's... its always those :D
 
Your description sounds like the fan is running on high all the time. My K&N intake makes what could be described as a "jet engine" sound I can hear if I listen for it when I'm on it a little.
 
Ok thanks guys, I appreciate it, I will try and diagnose the problem one at a time and alleviate things on that list grell. She(my ls haha) just got out of the dealership about a week ago for the regular oil change so i dont think it is that. My next thing was going to be the water pump anyway, so hopefully that will cure it. Speaking of that, I was looking to get that done, any suggestions on the pump? I was thinking motorcraft. Ebay has a lot, but didnt want to put lesser quality parts in the car going the ebay route.

LS4ME, Yea the fan runs on hot, so it runs all the time but when I first installed it, I never heard that sound until recently.

Just to get educated a little, why would the tensioner cause that sound, or the chains?
 
The OEM (Motorcraft) water pump seems to be very reliable and rarely has to be replaced. If you do replace it, go OEM.
 
Jet Noise

I agree with hearing the "jet noise" with a K&N system. Try spraying CARB-MEDIC around your intake to check for a vac leak while engine is running. It is the only carb cleaner without water in it's formula! Available @ any auto parts chain store.
 
How's the electrical system holding up? Any battery lights on after the conversion? It didn't take my higher mileage factory alt long to crap out after

I suggest this because one of the possible sounds of a failing alternator is a high whining-type sound that I described to someone as "jet engine". Usually happens when the rectifier in it goes to hell.

With an intake, it's pretty obvious to localize the sound to it and cancel it out. If you're not having idling issues than a vacuum leak is probably not the issue....not that it isn't a possibility though.

No no electrical issues, everything seems fine. Idling issues, do you mean when the car is in idles it is shakey and what not? Because I have not noticed any ruggedness when in idle. Its just when Im driving and I increase speed it just sounds like a jet noise or a sound of a loud hummmm.
 
Yeah, rough idling is what I was referring to with the vacuum leak. That's easily verified with some starting fluid/carb cleaner/propane tank etc to see if the idle jumps when those are sprayed in that area.

It sounds like your issue (actually non-issue) is the intake making the noise. If you haven't noticed the sound ever since you put the K&N on the car, I'd look into the previously mentioned areas for suspects. Canceling out the water pump and other noisy areas is really easy with a stethoscope from harbor freight. A very sound ;) $4 investment
 
Thank Broseph, is it a special stethoscope for cars?
And would I put the instruments on each of the previously mentioned areas while car would be running while I rev engine?

A 36" wooden 1/4" or 3/8" dowel from a home store or hobby shop makes a great cheap stethoscope. Put one end on the bone in front of your ear and the other on any non-moving parts on the engine to hear what's going on there. Really long screw drivers work well too.
 
UPDATE;

Finally bit the bullet and took her in to the local lincoln shop here in town. They fixed an annoying sender unit switch, and replaced my oil pan gasket, and now seems the sound is gone!

Thinking maybe low on oil, but still wouldnt make sense why that noise would be so loud due to low oil. But oh well, happy as can be.

still gonna have the tensioner, alternator, chain, pump serviced here soon once holidays pass. She is probably due for them anyway at 114,000
