I am getting a tapping that appears to be down low in the motor. It is only at idle, rev the motor and the tapping is gone. After it is driven a while, it doesn't tap at idle. I am afraid it may be a rod noise. Anyone have any ideas?

i was hearing a taping down low on the passenger side of my engine. I had a couple shops check it out. they both thought it was the timing chain and tensioners.

I really, really doubt its a rod. As a matter of fact I bet a new 2010 Porsche 911 on it.

Should note, that just because it sounds like it is coming from the bottom end it may not. I have had things similar before where it echos through the motor and sounds more prominent in another section.

My '96 with 190K miles has a horrible rattle/knock when you first start it up. It lasts less than a second and then it's gone. I've been told it's the timing chain tensioners. They leak down when the engine is turned off and pump back up when the engine is started. It's been doing that since I got the car almost 10 years ago.

Try this

when you start your car up..before you turn the key, press the gas pedal all the way to the floor and hold it there, while you turn the key.

When you turn the key the car wont start because flooring the pedal turns off the injectors.

Turn the car over for 4-5 seconds, then release the gas pedal and then start the car.

The timing chains shouldn't rattle because the above procedure pumped up the hydraulic lifter assembly.

Give it a shot... it works

it works, I did it on my 95 in cold start situations and also on tiff's 93 for the "first start" after it'd been sitting for many hours....
it works

That sounds like the "cam tensioner rattle" only found on 1993's. I had it on my 1993. Ford gave me a new engine (really a remanufactured engine) for it a long time ago. It is only on 93's, there was/is a TSB for it and Ford won't do anything about it now.

If this is your problem, it should cause no damage and shouldn't hurt the car or engine at all............at least according to Ford.

If somebody here knows how to find TSB's, they should be able to find it.

Ken

The tapping is different than the timing chain rattle at start up, it starts after about a minute at idle.
