I know you've seen them, everybody's got them, not sure of the technical name, but they are those black fasteners that hold down all the plastic parts in the engine compartment. Looks like the heads are about an inch in diameter and are worthless after they are popped to do things like change the cabin air filter, remove the big engine cover on the engine (in my case says Lincoln V8 at least one of those is rubber and can be reused). The are all over the engine compartment (front rear etc...)

The question is, what are they called and where can I get them. I have a bunch of holes needing plugging.

I have an 00 LS V8.

Any clue would be appreciated.

While some will break over time, if you remove them correctly, they should survive the process several times.
The correct way is to push the center part of the pin down with a nail or something. Then the whole thing just lifts right out with no effort. To reinstall, pop the center pin up so that it is above the rest of the pin. Then when the pin is in place, push the center part down so that it is flush.

You can get them from Max, another Ford dealer, Ace/Tru-Value Hardware stores, maybe some autopart stores, or maybe even Lowes.

Thanks joegr, these are smoothed over (without a hole or any release). I was checking my cabin filter and had to remove them and lo and behold, they got wasted. They are pretty dried out (fragile), and been trying to locate the removable type. At least something that would work without kludging them.

The tops (cap) are completely smooth, one solid piece, nothing to pry or unscrew, or push into.

They seem to be the same all over the car, in addition to the hood fasteners, they are in the trunk as well.

I wonder if this was the batch they had at the factory.

I can't believe someone replaced all of them with this smooth (looks like one time use) fastener

Thanx for your effort. I think removable fasteners for the engine compartment are a must, especially with the cabin filter area, and in my case the vanity cap over the engine.

btw... joegr, I was at keesler for about 7mos 1969 before (camile i think hurricane) and returned after. I ended up flying out of gulfport airport to catch a flight in new orleans.

I loved that area. I imagine things have changed quite a bit since then.

They changed a lot after Camile, but they really changed after Katrina. Katrina took out just about all the old houses along the beach.

Rockauto has them. They are under AC/Heat-Cabin air filter retainer. THey are $1.05 each. I have bought a few over the years. I have only broken one or two, but every time the car goes to the dealer at least one disappears.

damn shame... and now the oil garbage (I guess I shouldn't go on, it will get political, not favoring either side)

There were a few missing when I go the car (used).

Not being the original owner or knowing the previous owners (got the car at an auction), it may have been treated like a cheap hooker.

I'm just going through it a bit at a time to get the things needing attention fixed.

Fortunately it runs well (123K) and we don't hammer it much.
