Engine and Tranny swap... (from 2000 LS to 03 LS)

A friend of mine has a Lincoln LS 2000 (3.9 L)....and has access to a 2003 3.9 L engine and transmission.....we've questioned a few dealerships about a possible swap.....i'd say (out of 3 of them) 2 said yes....it can be done, BUT! i wanted to question the gurus here if anything....

1.) Can it be done? (as a straight, clean swap: no modifications)

2.) If any modifications are involved then what are the possible modifications that'll be needed?

There are a few threads on this.

The Gen2 (2003+) uses CAN protocol, throttle-by-wire, VVT, electric fan - whereas the Gen1 (2000-2002) does not.

so it is a BIG BIG job. everything from the throttle pedals, all several computers throughout the car, ....

Why not just save the money from swapping engines and put in a Xcal tuner, intake, and exhaust and get 14.3 on the 1/4 mile whereas the same mods on a 03+ gets you 14.2....... .1seconds isn't much of a loss
