So I took my car for a emissions test the other day. Changed quite a ways from three years ago. I don't know if it had to do with the vehicle I was driving at the time(1991 Ford Ranger) but all they did was plug something into my car and turned it on. When I first went there they ran the truck on that "dyno" thingy.(Don't know the real name of it) Then when I went there last year with my 2002 Malibu they put something in the gas tank while they ran the car. So question I'm asking is, what's changed?

It varies by state.

Here in NV in the two county that require emissions test: 1999 and up with OBD2 port they plug in and look under the car to see if the cats are there, up load directly to the state and collect $20 every year after the first two new years. You get only a receipt no certificate, go on line, and pay for your new sticker that is mailed. On vehicle older than 1999, they stick a sensor up the exhaust, look for cats and see if you have a gas cap then up load.

wow u gotta pay?? im in IL and i've never had to pay. I got a piece of paper saying I passed and just basic specs on my car. It said my car wieghed 4020 pounds.. WHAT?!

"that thing in the gas tank" is the exhuast hose.

The first time i got obd2 car i didnt know they didn't have to run it on the "dyno". Needless to say i went on a nice romp to heat up the cats and got a ticket for 19 over. I felt like a big goof after i left the emmisions center.
