If that front cover doesn't go, I may snag that from you too (provided I win the block). Not sure that I'd need it, but it isn't like they are super easy to come by used; usually they go with the block or engine. Junk yards almost never separate the two (unless there's catastrophic failure to the block).
Just out of curiosity, why are you parting it out? Was the engine running fine?
This block could end up in the front of my F-150 4x4... or I might hold onto it and put it in a mustang. I don't know; I like building engines and I like the 4.6... so there's really no harm in having an extra block laying around!!! (I've got an iron block SOHC on my engine stand right now that is pending a rebuild)
I'm not sure on the details but the guy at the Lincoln dealership said that the whol left side lost compression and there was only two or three cylinders on the passengers side that were at full compression. He told me to keep the diagnostic cost down they weren't going to tear it apart. But the cylinder walls look fine.
Okay... so likely a head issue then; If there's still cross hatching in the cylinders, it's unlikely that you're very far out of round and it's unlikely there's any taper or compression ring wear to speak of. From what you describe, my money is on head gasket or valves (seats or valves themselves). I just want to make sure I don't end up taking a teksid block down to the yard for scrap!!
the only issue that i know of is, after i had the engine installed by the mechanics, i noticed that, where the starter was bolted on is broken, you can see the pic on ebay there is still a good amount of thread left
